There’s an argument he could do a job as a squad player. But the reality is it only takes a few injuries and he’s starting and we all know he’s not good enough. Two players for every position and after that you should be either playing utility players or looking to your academy

I’m not saying he’s great, I’m saying he’s clearly a success for the academy. You can’t just pretend he’s not because you don’t like him, he’s played 160 games and even captained the side. If we don’t count players like that as an academy success then we might as well fold the whole thing.
He captained the side once when Silva said we have 11 captains, mate he’s awful, constantly gives the ball away and just doesn’t offer anything to the team really, I remember playing sheff wed away in the cup and the first thing he did was give it away right to their centre forward, Pickford saved his blushes. Who said I didn’t like him? I don’t know him I’m just commenting on his footballing ability, I’ve seen he does a lot of good stuff outside of football so I’m more likely to like him lol.

Actually just checked it up, and it's worse thsn I remembered, the wigan loan was three months they wanted to keep him in div one we refused he sat here till January then we loaned him out to oxford in div two I initially fir one month which we allowed to be extended to the end of the season.

Next season he played a few minutes the last two games of the season having literally sat around the squad not playing all season.

Why not let the wigan loan be extended initially in league one where he was playing, why not the following season organize a loan to the championship instead of at a crucial age in his development he basically didn't play.

Can already see a similar thing happening with Dobbin

I'm not the biggest fans of loans, but there's little doubt we need to have a better plan with younger players. Over the last 6 years we had been given the myth that Moshiri's money alone could elevate us, and we didn't need to take youth development very seriously. A succession of short term managers underline that.

The only constant was Unsworth, who seemed to prioritise 23's football over loans and wasn't ruthless enough moving people on. So he set up a niche, that didn't help the process. It's no surprise Thelwell punted him very early on, and probably one of Brands biggest failures that he didn't punt him.

Dobbin is a concern too. We've actually at first team level done what was sensible with him, in that we have got him some exposure to first team and he has done ok. We should do this a lot more (if only to help get them decent loans) but if he's not going to play next season we have to get him out on loan. In honesty, we should be using him as a bargaining chip to Forest and Hull with their young players. Hopefully there is someone who would take Onyango too. You then try and do the same with Welch/Price this year, where they get some games, do ok and get themselves a loan move out of it.

Can see him getting a new deal. Got no cashola for back up full backs and the lad plays both sides.

He's not good enough to even retain as a squad player. The quality of our actual squad players need to be well above him. He's league one at best.

He's been very lucky we've had a high turnover of managers because with each change of the guard it has allowed him a stay of execution.

I want him gone... Good luck for the future but there is the door.

Davies is a success but the problem is he shouldve been a much bigger success - Kenny likewise. Davies wasn't put in the best position possible to succeed because the club prioritised the short term and used him as a Swiss army knife to plug holes and cover ground in bad teams. Yes he's played a lot but with his pedigree you could argue we should be hoping for a lot more from a 24 year old going into next season than he can plug holes in an injury crisis. In another timeline instead of some of us clamouring for Gilmour we would be happy we took our time with Davies and developed him into the deeper lying 6 who enjoys the ball and doesn't just run around slowly. Instead he's still the exact same player as at 18

With Kenny whilst he probably never becomes a top class prem starting full back in any world he probably didn't benefit from being sent to the worst Schalke side ever and a Celtic team in disarray. The club didn't really know what to do with him be that sell, loan or keep in the first team for about 3 years, even now we aren't sure if he will be released. Brands was really really bad at 'pathways' despite how much the club banged on about it.
I agree to a large extent but ultimately I’m just not sure either of them are good enough to do much more in the game than they’ve done. Obviously they could both have been marginally better if they’d had the absolute best coaching and development available, but in my opinion (I’m not claiming to be infallible) they both just lack the X factor to make them true top level players.

There’s no disgrace in having the careers they’re having, they and the academy should be proud, but fans always latch on to a couple of highly rated prospects and then spend their entire careers fantasising of how good they could have been if it wasn’t for bad luck/being sent on loan/not being sent on loan/not having the same manager for their entire career etc.
