Jonjoe Kenny

…a 2nd rate RB doesn’t provide LB cover.

The club is bereft of left footed players, we need balance. I genuinely think Townsend is a better option if he recovers from his injury in time. We do have a talented LB coming through that @blueloon can confirm/deny. I’d already have him ahead of Kenny from a LB perspective.

I agree but I guarantee thats what Lampard will use him for.

We have 2 RBs in Patterson and Coleman who neither are leaving this season.

And it’s just not as simple as that is it. We’ve been “trying to move on” players that are on long contracts and wages that dwarf anything they’d get elsewhere for the past 6 years. He will be here for the duration of his contract because there isn’t another club out there who would touch him on Premier League wages. His level is genuinely League 1.
He'll defo be coaching our u18s or whatever in 15 years too

Tbf, his new deal will probably come in around £20k p/w & he offers cover at both left back & right back should injuries arise. Think it's a no brainer tbh. He'll likely get very little play time if we somehow manage to avoid injuries - with a transfer cap & more vital area to focus on, don't mind it personally...

But he can’t play left back, he’s horrendous at it? He isn’t even an adequate right back at this level. We can’t be paying players £20k a week to do a job in the League Cup 2nd round against lower league sides.

Least of our worries in all fairness. Midfield bodies are needed urgently. This is where we're overrun every week and the defence takes the flack. No, Kenny's not good enough for a shirt but it is what it is. Midfield, midfield, midfield.

This crazy decision to extend Kennys contract will lay firmly with Lampard and Thelwell, what the F have we appointed here.... Delph contract to be confirmed and we are ready to go next season with the exact same squad as this season less Richy and DCL.......

We needed all these absolute ass clowns out not signing them all up on better deals!

I'm not suggesting it's a good deal rather stating the reasoning behind it. It's testament to the situation we're in.

A lot of fans fail to grasp the financial position we find ourselves in.

I highly doubt the club would keep the gurner around as cover if they could replace him.

Way I see it we have the following to address as a matter of urgency:

1. Reducing FFP losses to comply with the rules

2. Sign 1-2 CB's, 1-2 CM's and possibly another wide player / forward.

I was hoping we would boot the lad but at present getting rid of the bigger earners has to be priority and reducing our wage budget thats out of control - Gbamin/Kean/Gomes/Mina at the minimum need to follow Delph and Toshun out the door.

Kenny assisted more goals in the prem than Coleman and Mykolenko combined last season btw ?
For me the Burnley game encapsualted exactly what Jonjoe Kenny is..... if Lampard and Thelwell can watch him and decide he offers something for a Premier League football club then perhaps their positions need to be reconsidered.

If we had the money to bring in two new full-backs, there is no chance we'd be renewing Kenny's contract. Sadly.
Why not. Kenny is a good insurance, he's a known quantity. Frank seems to have the 'inside' regard for him. Better than punting on an unknown 3rd who can cover both L and R which is needed.
Could see them going for a RB/CB type player.
