Jonjoe Kenny

….I think it epitomised his weaknesses. In a critical game it underlined everything that has been highlighted. Weak defensively, weak in the top third and weak in possession. Major factors in that defeat.

Skinned by their left back and totally out of the game with no powers of recovery in the lead up to a goal. Pushing for a winner, the ball breaks to him on the edge of the box, he lacks quality to control & shoot, he lacks quality to keep possession, he loses the ball, we are exposed, Burnley break and score.

it wasn’t a one-off, it confirmed the views of many posters. Burnley is quite rightly mentioned.
Godfrey and Doucoure and a few others who I can't remember off the top of my head were awful against Burnley too. He had a bad game that day but most of our side produced at least one or two shocking performances last season. Gomes for example looked like he had won a competition to get a game on more than one occasion and he gets less hate despite being on very high wages and being an expensive signing who has completely let us down.

Our squad has so many bigger problems than Kenny. He won't be on big wages and gives 100% every game. Obviously he's not good enough as a starter but he's versatile, a local lad and committed.

There are 5-10 players on bigger wages who I'd get rid of before him and who also don't give 100% every game.

So what is the point? He is never gonna push anyone to improve! At 25 he is as good as he will ever likely to be... this deal will take him up to the age of 28.

When you see Kenny & Rondon in the squad it isnt hard to see why we were fighting relegation as soon as we get injuries to the starters and the back ups all come in.

This club has learnt absolutely nothing, more of the same next season, we will be in a relegation fight again. I will also re-iterate those expecting big chages are deluded, those saying we need 2 CBs, 2 CMs and a CF need to get real.

If we are getting Kenny resigned and Tarkowski then clearly no money is available. I notice all our links are to defenders, how many can we get in one team?

We have Coleman and Patterson for right back and Myko and Nkounkou for cover at LB. We shouldn’t be offering Kenny another contract.
A player they tried to move on for 4 yrs and couldn’t

A player they left on the bench and opted to convert Iwobi into a fullback to avoid having to play him

In a squad where moving people on is the problem, the low hanging fruit are the ones with expired contracts

They just never learn

Kenny was always going to be offered another deal. We need cheap back up.

He is not a starter, but this season has shown how susceptible we are to injuries.

….absolutely, but the point we’re making is that the Burnley game highlighted Kenny’s frailties when it most mattered. it wasn’t a one-off.

Bottom line is, Kenny’s presence in the team even as back-up is a weakness. He shouldn’t be rewarded with a new deal if we are to progress.

If we had a great squad and we were 1 or 2 moves away from something great I would definitely agree but at this stage we have probably 10 players who need to be shipped out first. A defender who is likely to play a few cup games and in injury crisis scenarios is the least of our worries.

…he is the worst of our worries but if he’s used much in the next 3 seasons we genuinely will be a struggling team.
