Jonny Evans. Strongly linked by proper newspapers. Hmm.

Assuming he comes for, lets say, 6m upfront, then is he ?

We are paying for a back up. Jagielka and Stones are the first choice pairing, so Evans is a back up. There won't be rotation.

Not only that, Evans coming in stunts the chances of our youngsters getting games and coming through like Stones did.

And on top of that, we're paying bloody £8m - is that our record fee for a centre half? Not far off it.

It's an all round joke of a transfer.
They might be the first choice defenders at the minute, but what if they go through a bad spell of form? Who have we got to replace them, some untested kids?

It may be our record fee for a centre half, and sound steep, but it's probably about the going rate these days. we paid 5mil for a 32(?) year old Distin about 6 years ago.

Is this going to break our transfer record for a defender?

£8mil for someone who couldnt get in the UTD defence ahead of McNair and Blackett + Smalling and the other two?

£8mil for UTDs 6th choice centre back with a year on his contract?!?!

Doubt it will be £8mil, and it's a decent signing. He's experienced and, for a CB, still young at 27.

I'm not saying we didn't need a centre half - I'm saying that Jonny Evans was not the centre half we needed. Perhaps on a Gibson like fee of under a million, which is about his value in my eyes, but £8m takes the biscuit. He's on an expiring contract and well down the pecking order there and is widely regarded as a joke of a player central to the demise of United over the last few seasons.

No, I wanted Scott Dann. If you're happy with this signing, then as I said, fair enough. £8m for a player like Evans is a joke, stinks of panic buy.

I was ok with Scott Dann, but they wanted about 15m.

People need to start realising that all the teams in the league have got about 30m+ extra to play with, some of the prices are gonna make people cry.

Its hardly a panic buy 6 weeks before the season starts mate.

I've said this elsewhere when on the subject of Evans but my gripe of him is the fee. 8m in todays market can't be sniffed at but its still a chunk of change for us and is too much to spend on a back up.

....... and i really hope he's not playing around with the idea's of a back 3 in his head.

To be honest it gives me a bit of hope that we've got our playermaker identified if we're doing this deal first. I doubt it's £8m as a straight up fee given the contract situation and Utd openly looking for recruitments in defence though. Utd are clearing the decks and if Martinez thought it was to much we'd ask him to sit tight like with McCarthy and Cleverley and try and hold our nerve till the last minute.

He's a good player and if we end up meeting any add ons to the initial fee it will be because he's done well.

get phil neville back hes won more than him ! and would cost less !

Jesus mary and joseph

Not only do you have a history of complete disregard for overuse of the common exclamation mark, you also consistently post utter lunacy.

Tell me sir, does your posting history focus predominately on the July - August period?

I respect your opinion, but I'll reserve judgement until he's at least played a handful of games for us.
That is if we actually sign him and assuming we do actually pay £8mil
