2018/19 Jordan Pickford

Which is fine, but it's a different matter when it's constant jumping on him regardless of if he has a good game or not.

Same with Gylfi. Same with Davies.

It's really weird. And I can't think that any other fanbase is like this with as many of their players as we are.

It's not wrong to think someone isn't good enough, but we're not exactly a good side. Pickford's one of the few we have that can push us to that next level.
They all are. Seriously, all of them.

We obviously notice our fans more because we're on here and reading Everton twitter etc, but all fanbases have the same elements as ours do. I lived in North London for years, my local pub was a proper Arsenal place so I used to talk to their fans before and after games most weeks and it was exactly the same as talking to our fans. They'd be going on about how whichever keeper they were playing at the time was terrible, Mertesacker was the slowest player they'd ever seen, Monreal was an embarrassment, Ozil was lazy etc etc. There's nothing weird about our fans, apart from the fact some of them want to make out like it's our fault we're rubbish.

Mate England’s opponents atbthe World Cup bar Croatia and Belgium were pants, let’s be honest. Belgium and Croatia both beat England too. Pickford can make decent saves but he has a lot of weak parts of his game and his arrogance is starting to piss me off , he’s making massive mistakes I games far to often this season , although the arsenal game he cannot be blamed for any of the goals

Making massive mistakes far too often.....well the thing about that is that it isn’t true.

Don’t think anyone has said it’s the fans’ fault we’re rubbish tbh. Just that we have the worst fans in the country and they make it unpleasant for anyone going the game.

Not in this thread, but it often comes up that the fans are responsible for poor performances because either:

a) We're too hard on the players, booing and heckling, meaning they can't express themselves and so go on to lose games,

or

b) We're not hard enough on the players, so they think they can get away with poor performances and we'll be 'happy clappers' just accepting failure and so they go on to lose games.

I assume most of the fans who say these things have never been to any other grounds/spoken to fans of other teams, otherwise they'd realise it's just a standard football fan/society thing and not at all specific to Everton.

Anyway, Pickford needs to use this new contract as a platform to start making saves and positively contributing to matches, otherwise our notoriously terrible fans might start questioning whether he's really completely blameless for conceding an absolute shedload of goals for every team he plays for.

Honest truth this
Opened this thread and posted this without reading any previous posts
Would I be right in saying there are 2 trains of thought on Pickford signing a 6 year deal.
1) The club are increasing his value when we forced to sell him next summer to pay for transfers , a return to sell to buy
2) Pickford has seen and been told of big changes on the way and wants to be part of it.

I could nearly tell you what posters are in what camp
I’m in the second one , always the optimist.

Well those fans are wrong. We are terrible, yes, but what a normal fan would do is accept that fact and actually try to maybe get behind the rebuilding job and give it a bit of time. But instead you have people wailing away on social media calling for the manager’s head after 6 games as they think we’re entitled to success just because a previous moron spent a lot of money assembling said garbage squad. This clearly translates into the ground on a match day, where you have us being booed off at half time when drawing against a team we “should” be beating. Despite the fact that superiority complex is completely unfounded as we’re still abysmal.

Then there’s the other side of the fanbase, actively wanting our players to be rubbish and revelling in it when they are so they can tell faceless people on an Internet forum how right their initial opinion was. There’s nothing wrong with criticising a player’s performance, or if a player has proven himself genuinely rubbish throughout his career expressing your wish to see him not in the team, but it’s got to the stage where people are just making up errors and poor performances because they have to make themselves feel good somehow, and being right and/or “winding people up” is that validation they need.

lol No one's paying that for him.

Dave, Chelsea paid £70m for a 23-year-old from Bilbao.

Him and Pickford are pretty similar in terms of quality and Pickford is only a year older.

Add in the fact he's England's number one, in the mental Premier League market anyway - which is inflated for homegrown players - and now he's on a six-year deal, £60m would be our starting price (not that we'll sell him any time soon).

They do though. I responded to somebody just yesterday who said 'it's not his fault the defence is rubbish' as if he was a completely separate entity. It's not always in so many words though, there are lots of comments after games where people are saying there was nothing he could do, he was exposed etc. It's like people are happy to blame a defender for being fractionally late closing someone down 30 yards out, but not happy to say a keeper could be doing better with the shot.

I've said before, it's not that he should be blamed, simply that he seems to get a free pass from many no matter what happens. Beaten by a free kick from 30 yards? Bloke put it in a postage stamp what can he do. Beaten by a header from a corner? Poor marking. Shot from inside the box? Exposed by the defence. Outside the box? Shouldn't have been allowed to get a shot away. He's not been majorly at fault for a lot of goals, but nor has he been responsible for us winning many points. In short, he's just been OK, and yet it seems some players get a lot of stick for being OK (Gana, Sigurdsson etc) and others don't (Pickford, Tosun etc). Seems weird to me, that's all.
