Oh I disagree with you there mate. I struggle to appreciate any side of this feller's game.
Never commands his area (even his 6 yard box); terrible one on one; kicking a joke for the most part; cant claim a cross; awful spatial awareness.
He is right up there with the worst Everton GKs I've seen. He's the Naismith of GKs.
Not for me mate, he has talent, plenty off it and there is head room for development there. For me he is at a specific stage of development, he has achieved and been exposed to an awful lot in a short space of time. To be honest I think he has become arrogant and thinks he’s still the star performer in the latter stage of the World Cup. He needs to learn that success has to be hard earned all the time and he is a dum of an over all part. That today was arrogance and hubris, as was What happened in Mordor to a degree.
There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance, confidence can be used for focus and composure, arrogance leads to ego feeding, which is what we are seeing.
I’d drop him personally for two games and teach him a bit of humility and try to get him to reflect to progress. He’s a young lad though and this is just a stage in his development.
I disagree on his ability, for me the keeping position has changed hugely in the last three years. He is a very good shot stopper, he’s excellent at sweeping (apart from today), no keeper is good on crosses anymore it’s a skill gone out of the game because of keeper being targeted and blocked, they are told not to go for them because it’s high risk. They are told to punch it only if it’s anywhere in there range. I think his distribution is excellent myself and we need that the way Silva has us playing from the back. He will improve as well I have no doubt about that he’s still a kid.
Like I said I think the keeper position has changed fundamentally in two seasons. Where it was fine to have s good tall shot stopper in there a couple of years ago, we are now in the age of sweeper keepers, by that I mean a keeper had to sweep, come of goal to cut out a long ball a striker is runningin to, playing out from the back they are the safety player, if the defender is high pressed he is the out and has to distribute either long or short, that’s in addition to being a good shot stopper, managing your degree and set prices etc.
I think we evaluate keepers on skill sets from the past, these days we need to judge keepers on new skill sets as the role is changing before our eyes and they have a completely different role now as the game has involved.
It’s no longer 10 outfield and 1 in, It’s 11 outfield.
