2018/19 Jordan Pickford

I have said a while ago I think as a club we overate Pickford slightly. As you and others have probably noticed I am quite defensive of most players, not one to throw them to the wolves but something doesn't quite add up with him. I am probably not as critical as you, but he gets quite an easy pass for me.

It's not just the mistakes (which can happen, god knows even Alisson at that lot has made mistakes and I would say he's the best in the country) but it's that he doesn't win us many games. Ask yourself in the year and a half he's been here, how many games has he won us? I think Stoke at home last season. Crystal Palace this season. Maybe Fulham where he makes a couple of good saves at 1-0? To me, for a goalkeeper at the level he purports to be at, it seems a small number.

It's in moments like we are in now, where a goalkeeper can make a huge difference. He can save shots that may not be easy, but are saveable to get you over the line.

I'll bene quite honest and say I don't think the lad has showed the form he had for Sunderland while here. And that was a young goalkeeper, in a woeful side. He has got 2 years older in that time and I sam not sure he's kicked on.
I've said that time and time again mate. He's never been THE difference in any game I can remember.

The worst of Pickford is that he's debiliating for a team. The team know he will throw in 1 or 2 howlers per game and it could undo all that went before it. That cant be right having a player like him who faces zero competition. If I were the owner and watching this I;d be saying to Brands "remind me again why this club have paid a fee for Virginia and pay him wages if he's never to be played?".

It's unreal the amount of time Pickford has had this season to derail our campaign. No wonder he's arrogantly laughing his bollocks off. He's been made untouchable.

Trying to blame Pickford for that goal just makes no sense. It was clearly a mistake by Michael Keane and nobody else.

Nah! Pickford could have knelt down and picked that shot up then threw it out to our striker in acres of space and we would have been one up. All Pickfords fault. But then again Gomes is apparently crap now. Best just to laugh it off mate

Well...a bit Walcott too.
Keane should have cleared the danger, it was basic defending and he made a mess of it.... strangely , apart from that I thought he did quite well.

Walcott is so disappointing. He is the one player that can provide real pace in the team and he seems lost at the moment. I would nearly play him in the middle to see if he could offer anything there as he certainly isn't out wide. Maguire and Evans might not be so comfortable against real pace.

His performances at Sunderland were massively overhyped by the media. It looks all pretty when you're 3-0 down and you manage to keep it at 3 rather than 5 or 6. But his general ability as an all round goalkeeper was not assessed. His positional sense when we won 3-0 up there was nothing short of a disaster. I picked up on it, and if i remember correctly so did @davek. But people were more concerned with the heroics of him throwing himself
Lost count of the number of times when he was at Sunderland idiot pundits would pay tribute to him with comments like "Sunderland might have lost 4-0, but it could have been 8-0 but for Pickford".

Absolute lunacy anyone threw £30M at Sunderland for him.

That's spot on.

I get what you're saying, but I also have to agree with @davek in "he's been made untouchable". Outfield players regularly gets slaughtered and changed when they're performing badly.

Have you seen our reserve keepers? Pickford is under no pressure. Just think we tend to slaughter our better players and try to sound edgy or clever by spouting mainly rubbish. People are making out he is hopeless and he is far from it. He will make mistakes just like every other keeper but no doubting he is a good keeper.

Years ago, a 24 year old keeper was classed as VERY young. Not these days sadly.

Ter Stegen - 25
Courtois - 26 (though have a rubbish season)
Allisson - 25
Ederson - 25
Oblak - 25
Donnarumma - 19 FFS
De Gea - Whilst 28 now, hes been best keeper in world for past 5/6 years

So being 24 years old is not an excuse these days. Stick JP him the bench for a bit, his cockiness is his achilles heal

What's all the stuff about him being a "24 year old keeper" - as if it's an excuse for being 'kin dire week in week out.

It just about sums up how serious this club takes what it does when this clown has no competition for his place.

Its pretty much well recognised that 24 is quite young for a prem goalkeeper

That's part of the problem right there.
But there's no other way to get his head down from the skies again than benching him. Unless we sell of course.

It wasn't his fault. But the shouts from people saying he had no chance are ludicrous. It was a yard from his feet.

We need him to make some sort of meaningful save at some point soon. He has been a complete burden for 5 weeks. More interested in giving it large to team mates than winning us points.
