How did he do that? I dont remeber it. Are there any stats to back that up? And in the unlikely evet that there are, he had a manager last season who gets all the team behind the ball to protect the goal.
I think the problem we have with Pickford is there is no doubting him being an excellent shot stopper.
As ever the BUT
He has many other failings though, and my belief is most of these are the basics.
He is poor on crosses
His distribution is erratic
His commanding of his box is poor
His decision making is poor
To hot headed

All of the above should form part of any basics for a GK

In fairness still young and can learn these basics

If he does I believe we MAY have a good keeper

His only strength as I see it is to get down sharpish to shots put either side of him from a fair few yards away. Head height / over head height shots he waves into the back of the net.

He looks for all the world to me to like one of those raffle winners who's first prize is to get to play in goal for a few minutes for his local football team in a friendly game. I cant take him seriously as a PL GK. He simply isn't one.

At the very least, he did come off his line and help defend a free kick. Need to see more of that rather than rooted to his line. Maybe he's learning. We'll see the next game.

I remember the GK for Cardiff, I think his name was Marshal.
In some games he looked outstanding, saving everything thrown at him... but still letting goals in.
I get the same feeling with Pickford at times

As said still young so can hopefully learn...

Good call that mate. Mind you, having seen Marshall play I think he was head and shoulders above Pickford.

We paid a fair wedge for a keeper who still hasn't grasped the basics.

Every time the ball hits him it is proclaimed as three points gained by pickford and pickford alone. Too many people nailed their colours to the mast with the lad and the climb down is a tough one.

I agree. There's also the matter of his getting England starts. Many seem to feel this means he has a talent for goal keeping. Two words usually sort that notion out: David James.

He reminds me a bit of Shay Given, a decent, sometimes excellent keeper, but not from the very top drawer and never destined for it. Questions over his ability to dominate an area are always countered by his undoubted ability to pull of an incredible reflex save, highlights on MOTD stuff every time. Then after a time you maybe start to wonder if he's actually pulling off too many incredible reflex saves, because the best keepers are always adjusting their positioining so they very rarely need to do that?

He's very young for a keeper and of course he's not had a settled decent defence in front of him for some time now, so allowances should be made. Keepers need to believe in themselves and he clearly has that in his character. I just hope that both he's aware, or made aware, of just how much he needs to add to his game if he's going to truly justify the wave of hype that he's enjoyed pre and post the world cup. If I had to bet at present I'd say he was heading more for a Shay Given career rather than a Gigi Buffon one.
