Jose Baxter

Also interesting to see some members in this thread express disgust at us retaining Gibson, and others at Liverpool with Sakho but change their tune on Baxter.

Amazing what a few results can do for optimism, and an academy graduate can do for those blue tinted glasses ;)

I think it's a bad move.

We're a football club first, one that hasn't won a trophy for 22 years.

As much as we like to cling on to small successes/PR exercises for the club, I'm of the belief that Everton need to concentrate on the football, and leave the community stuff to EITC and the clubs directors.

We're supporters of the club, so our natural instinct is to support but whatever way we spin it, Jose Baxter is taking a contract and another's place in the U23 squad. Every minute he gets, is a minute less for Tom Davies v2. It's also a very clear irrefutable statement that there's a tolerance at Everton to drug abuse.

It's jobs for the boys.

Baxter got a contract at Oldham because Stubbs had a word.
Baxter got a move to Sheff United because Weir.
Baxter got a move back to Everton because Kenwright/Unsworth.

All the above isn't conjecture.

Everyone deserves a second chance, especially with the disclaimer of youth but there's a line and a point when you need to wake up.

Let's get it right - he's a professional footballer here. He's had every opportunity in life.

My instinct is that the lad is a wrong'un. He's spat in the faces of too many. Suspended twice in nine months at 23/24 years of age.

All that said, I trust David Unsworth. I just hope there isn't external factors/pressures involved here due to Baxter's influence in Liverpool.

I think its a great move, he is a fine example of what not to do for the young lads we have at the club. A lot depends on what Baxters outlook on life is right now, if he has reformed then brilliant, if he hasnt then maybe we can help him and stop him going down a road that can only lead to one place.

Id much prefer the club to try and help him than say "nah we are business" let him rot. Obviously this is a very drastic outcome but we may be saving his life here at the end of the day.

Disagreeing with you all week Danny. Thats a cold hard very business like view while the points are all salient. The values of Everton are inherent at the club, we talk about Everton meaning something more, being the peoples club, we have a history of looking after our own all these things are important and for me the club are being terrific here. Its hard to quantify that but actions like this and last week just underline the morality of what it is that set us apart from other clubs.

People can have their opinions on Jose, but at the end of the day, its like a family, would many of us turn our backs forever on a family member who had difficulties, really proud of Everton here because its harder to do something than nothing here.

BTW Jose was strongly touted for a move to a top championship club before this happened.

" let him without sin throw the first stone" can any of you decrying this action by the club really say I have done nothing that was foolish, illegal or ashamed of I lived for 79 years and never met a person who can say that, neither can I.
Maybe best to send your vitriol down another path
I feel ashamed to be a supporter of a great club that has some so called supporters on this thread.

Didn't know there were other convictions mate, what were the previous one's to his going to jail?

I think multiple is harsh but he had a couple , head butting a copper and assaulting a bloke and you have to put crutches in . There is deffo a drink driving just before the Derby where he scored his first goal and might be a drunk and disorderly as well .

Jeffers is there for that purpose.

Lets bring in Marcus Bent, Mark Ward and others?

For me, it's an example that you can piss it all away and still secure a contract at 24.

A lot depends on what Baxters outlook on life is right now, if he has reformed then brilliant, if he hasnt then maybe we can help him and stop him going down a road that can only lead to one place.

Mate, it wasn't long ago he failed two drugs tests.

He's also coming back to Liverpool - a place he admitted he shouldn't live.

Id much prefer the club to try and help him than say "nah we are business" let him rot. Obviously this is a very drastic outcome but we may be saving his life here at the end of the day.

I'd much prefer the club to concentrate on winning.

If Unsworth genuinely reckons he's good enough to get into the first team, then that's different.

As is, based on his comments, it doesn't seem that way.

Disagree. The business view is a positive in that he is an asset we'd likely make money on.

And i think we will make money here, he was doing well at Sheff Utd.

Well i'm not. Look it up.

Offence committed at Rangers in 1994. Joined EFC on loan for 94/95 season. Served 44 days in prison in Autumn 1995. His next game after his release was his first as a permanent EFC player.

He signed on loan that season , the deal was made permanent by big joe prior to the end of the season , the biography on Ferguson says prior to Christmas . At the trial in may , the extensive reporting had everton had his employer not rangers and those listed as his former employer .

I also recall no , absolutely no reporting of Duncan as on loan in the 95 final . Because in my recollection and opinion he wasn't , he'd signed on loan and the deal made permanent . The the 95/96 season was the first to begin with Duncan as an Everton player but he'd been one for about 6 months
