Jose Baxter

It is an unusual move and that is for certain.

However, I think that we may need to look at this from a wider perspective.

Why do this at all in the first place ? Realistically it is not to try to resurrect the career of a potential first team player. I imagine the best that can be hoped for is that Baxter will have learned his lesson and can get his life an his career back on track.

But, why did Everton do it ? We cannot help every lost soul and the club is operating in a hugely copmpetitive industry.
Yes , I can imagine Bill Kenwright making the gesture for publicity and also for sympathetic reasons. I think it could be seen as classic Bill Kenwright, just as I have no doubt that the generous donation to that little boy at Sunderland(Bradley) was also a Bill Kenwright idea.

But, why would Dave Unsworth agree ? he is going to have to deal with him every day and basically manage his rehab.

It certainly could be used as a salutary lesson to youngsters at the club to show how easily their greatest wish(a career in football) could be taken from them.

But, I expect this is done in conjunction with the advise and assistance of the medical and legal professions. I don't think this is done on a whim . I think it just may be a ground breaking exercise where football attempts to give something back.
Baxter may the first and given his footballing past will be of interest to the football WORLD.

Everton are trailblazers in community related matters and this just may be the start of something new. I find it hard to believe it is just a once off and simply a whim off Bill Kenwright.

You're really not right, you. (That's something coming from me)... This is the club looking after one of their own. ONE OF US. Yeah he's a screw up. That's the point. He's been brought back home to be given one year to sort himself out, regain fitness get a few u23 games and find himself a contract elsewhere. This isn't a pr stunt. This is the club giving an ex player a leg up in their time of need. This is a class act club showing their support for one of their own and not turning their back on him like you and a few others would have done. I honestly have to question, when reading your comments, how much of a Blue you actually are. Sure, I'm off my head, which is why I try to only post in moments of mental clarity, but you? You constantly bring us down and attempt to undermine everything good the club is trying to do. I thank all that's Holy that your voice is minuscule and not to be heard elsewhere.

I hope if I ever lose my job because I've been done doing lines and subsequently lose my home, car, etc that Everton will bail me out and pay my debt because I'm ONE OF US.

I've got my little gold loyalty badge and everything. That qualifies me, doesn't it?

'One of us' ha.. sounds like something Liverpool fans would say.

People are entitled to not be happy about this deal. I get that some people don't agree in giving chance after chance to somebody who was the architect of his own demise. Personally i take each situation as it comes. He's a young man from a working class up bringing who got paid vast amounts of money and fell in with the wrong crowd from what I can see. I'm all for giving him the chance to turn his life around. It's not like he's been taken in on a massive contract. My guess he's been brought in to give him a club, pay him a reasonable wage and allow him to rebuild his career. What's the alternative, let him leave the game with no qualifications and likely a poor education? If it doesn't work out it doesn't work out but the likelihood is it's more a reabilitaion opportunity then a big fat pay day

I'm a little surprised at how cynical people are about this move. It's just kind of meh to me. Good gesture by the club... possibly unnecessary but I'm not too arsed about it

I personally don't think EITC or Bradley is what GOT is referring to really mate.

I think 'charity case' is specifically aimed at Baxter who hasn't exactly covered himself in glory over the years.

Groucho he knows perfectly well what my point was. We as a club made it repeatedly clear that the donation to Bradley was from the club, not EITC. It is the most prominent recent example of the club acting superbly in a way which is not directly related to footballing matters. Such things are 'Everton' as far as I'm concerned, I do not buy into his comment that the club should only worry about the football.

Nevermind.

No Phil, it's not.

Baxter got a contract at Oldham because Stubbs had a word.
“Next thing I knew, Stubbsy was on the phone, saying, “What’s this about quitting and not having a club? I’m not having that. Leave it with me and I’ll get back to you”.
‘He had a word with (former Everton keeper) Paul Gerrard at Oldham and in no time Paul Dickov was offering me a contract. It was only for three or four months initially and I was on buttons, but I was made up. I was so grateful to Stubbsy for effectively saving my career. Without his intervention, I don’t know what I’d have done.

Baxter got a move to Sheff United because Weir.
On Baxter's capture, Blades boss David Weir expressed his delight at recruiting the former Everton trainee.
Weir said: "I have worked with Jose before and know what he can do, so I want to thank the Club for making this move happen."

Baxter got a move back to Everton because Kenwright/Unsworth.
See today's coverage...

Yes Danny, it is. For a start I specifically highlighted 1 part of that, so congrats on ignoring that to make a point. Secondly offering someone who previously played at the club the chance to train and rehabilitate themselves with us, on a 12 month contract, and 'jobs for the boys' are two very different things.

lol lol

We've give him a contract while he's still suspended for drugs lollol

No, we've offered him a contract when his ban runs out. Should all ex-cons be prevented from ever having a job or returning to the previous place of work? lol lol

And the boss counters beautifully.

Not really. Ignored half the points raised, and just plain wrong on others...

That's an idiotic preposition. £200,000 is not a significant sum to our finances plus Bradley is extremely unlikely to be a malign influence at the club. Can you make the same statement about Baxter?

Well if he is on 5k/week as has been touted around here, then over the course of his 12 month contract that would be £250,000, so.... Of course your second point is debatable, but I would prefer to trust Unsworth (not so much Bill) on that point.

How would he be taking someone else's place - is there a max squad amount in the 23's ?

Edit: can't see anything on the premier league site

He wouldn't be, it's a nonsensical suggestion.

Egggggs-achktly!

This is a ex player who slagged off the club and the coaches who brought him through.

He has lied and blamed everyone of his crimes on not being his fault.

He's also a kopite who called us blue ***** on twitter numerous times.

How much of a blue is this waster? Not very much.

I still don't think it was aimed at Bradley.
