I don't think you could really compare Mata's value to prohibitive price tags slapped on players that clubs want to keep. Everton, for example, know full well that no one is going to pay more than £30m for Lukaku, but they still set an exorbitant asking price to discourage others from so much as opening dialogue.

For the record, Everton could pay £50m for Mata and I'd be over the moon. He'd be the best player to come here since Kanchelskis.

I just want to remind you the reason Chelsea sold him because the price is too good to be turned down. If we bid £25m - £30m 3 years ago, there is no way Chelsea would sold Mata to us.
