Kevin Mirallas

He wouldn't have changed the game yesterday. We needed something different and on occasions this year Kone has offered that, as well as being able to get up and support Rom.

Mirallas is a totally different type of player. I imagine he will start next week.
Im sorry, that is just something that can't be quantified. You think Aroune fn Kone is the answer, i say you are massively wrong. Mirallas can shoot from distance. Do you disagree? A team that sits back and defends against a team that tries to walk it into the box(ie: yesterday) needs someone who shoots from distance. Who has more goals outside the 18 yard box for Everton in this squad? Mirallas. He shoots near once or twice, they start moving and opening space.

So...what, exactly, did Kone offer?

Thing with that is, as good at shooting from distance as he is, Mirallas can over do it sometimes to the teams detriment

Can understand the arguments for both Mirallas and Kone, we know the latter didn't work out but then neither did Kev in the same game last season when Pulis came with the same tactics. (I'm meaning in being able to break them down rather than the whole penalty incident mess)

We've often struggled to beat teams that play that way, regardless of personnel, was one of the reasons why a lot were wanting a "door unlocker" in last summers transfer window.

Pienaar might have been a decent sub yesterday as he'd have kept the width and has a way of drawing fouls near the box that we might have scored a set piece from but tbh since we couldn't score from the all chances we'd already created doubt it would have made a great deal of difference.

Ball drops in the box, Who do you want on the end of it, Kev, Kone or Osman
To be honest I don't think who it was dropping to was the issue but more that there just wasn't enough that physical presence that could cause loose balls in the box. I've not really seen Kev look like he will risk getting into those situations. Of the three I'd say Osman is the most likely to be in right place at the right time

I could have understood if he had wanted Kone to go up and play alongside Rom, but from what I saw he spent alot of time on the left wind or in midfield, not really anywhere near where he could have made a niusance of himself. Considering the position he ended up occupying I think Kevin would have been much more effective to be honest.
I'd agree that Kone isn't ideal in terms of adding a nuisance value against packed defences. We probably need that as an option, which might be the thinking behind our new signing

Kone is a number nine. A target man who has helped out on the left side with varying success.

We had players on the bench whose can play on the left; Del Boy and Miralles.

Pienaar has lost it and has become a well-known diver, no pace player who always cuts inside and one who slows down
attacks. He huffs and puffs to no advantage. WBA would have loved to have seen him come on. But a Del Boy on one wing and Lennon would have caused more panic.

No, I think Mirallas is the better of the two. I'm not questioning that.

I'm just pointing out that, based on the fact that in games like this when we've needed support to Rom (WBA away, Watford home, Sotton away etc.) Kone being up there has helped as he gives us another player to hit - as obviously we were looking to go more direct since West Brom had stemmed our initial tactics.

There was logic in that change, but it didn't work out.

I've also said that i'd have liked to have seen Kev on, but I don't think his 'shooting from distance' would have got us anything either. When efforts like those of Barkley and Cleverley don't go in, it's not going to be your day.

And we still created chances with Kone on the field as well. In fact we created loads in the last half hour - two really good ones falling to Barkley - but we couldn't finish them off. It's a shame but it happens.

Why put him on the bench week in week out but never use him?
it is a disgrace martinez what your doing to the lad after giving him a new contract yet Osman and kone can do wrong JOKE.

Disgrace is pushing it a bit, as I said elsewhere in this thread something has gone on off field whether that's a falling out or Kev being a billy big boots. Martinez doesn't seem the sort to bow down to ego players, hence why Distin was frozen out and Eto'o shipped out last season.

Thing is with the kone vs mirallas shouts, i can only think of two games this season where kone and lukaku linking up provided real results, how many have i missed? Off the top of my head sunderland and west brom were the only games you really saw them two linking up lead to something, other than that all i can remember is us hoping it would result in something rather than anything on the pitch.

but that is the worry here for me, that roborto sees kone as a better alternative to Mirallas when we need a goal. Mirallas has pace, attack minded and likes a shot (ala barkley) yet he is back to warming the bench every week.

What happened to him getting a chance to impress as was the shouts on here not too long ago? He played, did well, even scored and back to the bench you go. Hell even piennar would get on the pitch before him currently!

I wouldn't have brought Mirallas on either in all honesty

Mirallas is a good player - give him space in front of him and he's pacy and direct and a goal threat

What he isn't is particularly creative - numerous examples in the past where he's played against a packed defence and not been effective

Didn't surprise me at all that he had a good game for us at Chelsea when they were at home and on the front foot. Space to exploit and he's great at that.

Against a team with the bus parked like WBA on Saturday - no, just not his type of game.

That said, I wouldn't have brought Kone on either - I understand the logic of the change, but this overlooks the fact that Kone has been God awful for a while. Would have preferred to see McCarthy and Oviedo taken off and Baines and Pienaar brought on with Cleverley coming inside. We needed to create stuff and that might have given us the ability to stretch them more with Baines providing better prospects of delivery on the left and Pienaar helping to get him into positions to deliver.

Easy to say with the benefit of hindsight I suppose, but Mirallas wouldn't have been the one I'd have gone for, regardless of the fact that he is a good player

its odd i grant you, but we dont see what happens in training/dressing room etc etc

We were losing the game and it didn't look like we were going to get back into it. So what does the manager do? He brings on Arouna was-finished-two-years-ago Kone who has proven time and time again that he's pathetic. At least Mirallas can whip in a free kick, get a long-range effort in, do a bit of skill to open up the opposition. It was crying out for him to be brought on - not as the first sub as that had to be Deulofeu, which the manager also messed up - but quickly afterwards once it became clear things hadn't changed. Unreal from Martinez, again.
