2022/23 Kevin Thelwell

….he’s on record as saying he’s a ‘Line Manager’.

That means he’s not identifying players, he’s not even watching players. He appoints people who identify and watch players. its a crazy situation, we need a Football man in that role not an administrator.

Thelwell is symptomatic of the mess the club is in.
It's not his job to though. His job is to appoint a recruitment team to do that, at the moment we have no head of recruitment, it should have been one of the first roles filled when he came in but he chose to start messing about with the youth team. As DoF he is nothing more than a large scale project manager simply making sure the left hand works with the right and coordinating the various departments, so yes he is an administrator.

Yes and Brighton are just plucking random players out of thin air. They're on a hot streak now but their luck will run out at some point.

I highly doubt it’s “luck”.

You can go dumpster diving like we have, or you can go to South America, where players cost a fraction and develop them into good players like Caicedo, Estupian, Mac Allister.

Everyone should be following this model, and our scouts should all be outside of the UK, in France and South America picking up unknown quantities.

If City do it, Real and Barca do it, and teams like Brighton do it, why do we insist on overpaying for players like McNeil?

We can't afford the plane tickets.

What you have to consider though, is that you are actually thinking about things logically, where as the likes of Ped and the people you are trying to argue with just think "Everton bad. We no have plan. Brighton have plan. Brighton good."

You need to stop, for your own sanity.

Mike Tyson famously said "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth". I honestly believe these people think that not having a plan, and a plan not working are the same thing. And the thing is, when a plan doesnt work, or isnt working, and you get impatient and keep restarting, does that mean that having the plan was the wrong thing to do, or that they shouldve had the plan, just not that one?

You can argue until you are blue in the face about luck, but if our plans were based on hindsight, like most of these other peoples plans are, then you dont need luck, or as the saying goes, "you create your own luck", which is absolute nonsense btw. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say, and with it, you cannot fail.

You can replace your manager with Carlo Ancelotti, and later be told that Moyes was the right choice at that time. You can sign a highly rated exciting young player who doesnt work out in a new league, like Moise Kean, but in hindsight, you should have gone with experience. Or taking a gamble on someone who was worth £80m 2 seasons ago on a free, when in hindsight, it was obvious to everyone he was finished and we shouldnt have gone near him. But these same people then fume when we dont gamble on Almiron or Christian Erriksson. With hindsight of course.

I've seen people, including that enormous dope Ped, saying, "Look at Newcastle, thats how you do it, because they have a plan." Like Dan Ashworth has changed the club from top to bottom in less than the time weve had Lampard, and after spending £270m in 2 transfer windows with barely any sales, and most ironically of all, building their team around a player none of us wanted last January on a free (Longstaff) and managed by a manager none of us wanted last year (Howe).

Have we failed? Yes, yes we have.

Is it through lack of trying? No.

Theres just no reasoning with some people.
What was the plan when we bought about five number 10s in one window?

There is a clear and obvious difference between having a good plan and having a bad plan.
If your plan has almost no chance of success with a massive cost if it fails then it probably isn't a good one.
You are also allowed to say what your plan is. Brighton/Brentford and the other "smart" clubs are very clear on their strategies.

We clearly have a plan but it'd be PR suicide to talk about it openly. "Cut costs, prepare for the championship". If you look at everything that happened since Thelwell came in, barring maybe Onana, everything else fits this plan quite neatly.

If that was the case I don’t think you’d pay tarkowski £100k , maupay about £50k and McNeill around what £75 k . Those aren’t championship wages .

I expect all 3 have relegation clauses that put us in a better position. This helps explain why we signed Maupay and McNeil imo, they were willing to accept these clauses that other players weren't. Also, I question the Tarkowki and McNeil figures you have there. Maupay sounds about right though.

Mate, Mykolenko is on £50k per week, our wage bill is insane, we just chuck money at crap players, god knows what some of are other players are actually on. It wouldn't be so bad but because our turnover is so low it eats up like 80% of it when that number needs to be down nearer 60-70%

Looks like Kev’s just waiting for his severance pay off, bugger all else to do at toffee towers for a DoF, as bill Jung un is the master negotiator….
