2022/23 Kevin Thelwell

Can't believe Carlin has the nerve to say that about anyone, when his hero used to say I'm not paying wages to players who are sitting on the beach. So Bill was very busy, ( when we actually bought someone), only at the very end of the T/W, that was his speciality when he was the owner. Remember going three transfer windows without buying a first team player under Bills tenure.
Under Bills tenure, everyone thought a new owner would see us put this kind of thing behind us, but no, he has bought it back

He’s a massive part of the problem. Months and months to sort out a striker.

if we go down it’s on him plus the other idiots on the board.
Its not on him at all, this has been going on for years, as someone said above since Lukaku we havent really signed a real striker, thats not Kev's fault, but he is expected to sign a quality striker for a relegation threatened side, he has little chance

Recruitment is not his thing you can see that hence why he has recently put together a team. THAT is something you can have a go at him about as given our history in this area you think it would have been one of the first things he would have sorted when he started in the role. IMO I think Thelwell is more of an administrator type, more of a technical director. Normally with a DoF you would expect them to be doing the first team, academy, recruitment, medical, fitness, and analysis, so essentially overseeing everything. Whether he does this or is even allowed to do this who knows, but I know there is more to his job than recruitment. If we can get shut of Kenwright I'm interested in seeing how that changes our approach to any future transfer dealings and if we start to hear more from him.
Maybe I'm being stupid but I dont see how recruitment isn't the most important aspect of a technical directors role

Because his job is to select the best people that makeup the recruitment team, otherwise he would be head of recruitment or talent spotter or something of that ilk. He has screwed up here I'm not disagreeing with you, it's just more stuff that should have been sorted a long time ago typical us really.

Recruitment needs to improve, no-one can deny that.

But, I can't see how sacking Thelwell and ripping up the team he has in place and starting from scratch again is going to offer us instant improvements.

I'm intrigued by the new head of scouting from Brighton, would be great to have some of them successful signings of decent value. It will take time

It is the hardest position to get right I agree and January is a tough market. Yet the club had 5 to 6 months to find a replacement. They have had nearly 2 years really as Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been consistently injured. Now the club have loads of scouts, data bases and knowledge that we don’t have. You can also agree to sign players any time during the season. Look at Brighton that Japanese winger they signed for 2 million never heard of him but looks a player. I’m not giving this club any more excuses, they just need to get actual professional people in that know how to do the job they get paid for.

Yeah, to be honest we're still looking for a lukaku replacement, not just a DCL back up. we've had Niasse, Tosun, Kone and Rondon - hardly the result of clever scouting

Honestly blows my mind, opinions like this.

You could honestly buy virtually any striker from any of the leading 5 leagues, and they would have to be pretty diabolical to not improve on our current options.

We could not afford to at least try and improve on our pathetic current forward options, yet here we are. January was an absolute disaster and a complete and utter FAILURE from our DOF.

It wasn't an opinion, I'm just trying to ask if there were really options for us - especially when we were putting out such crap energy and information bout a club in turmoil. I'm not defending the DOF and board, and it's not like on Jan 1 - 31 is the only time they have to recruit. Clever clubs have people lined up and work through them methodically, or in advance.

I didn't say Thelwell was the only problem, but, he is undoubtedly a big part of it. He is director of football and has spent money in other positions in the team yet not recruited in the one position we really needed to fill. You're right of course, the problems here have been going on for twenty years and continue to do so, but, that doesn't excuse Thelwell for his failure to bring in a centre forward in either of his two windows here.
I agree but seems it's unclear what our budget was and the convoluted and confusing way everyone Bill, Mosh, the manager and DOF has to sign off on a player is clearly part of the issue and has been for years every DOF we have had hasn't been able to do their job unobstructed or without interference. But that we couldn't shift a few to make room in the budget for a forward is criminal though and he is part of that.

Don't let Moshiri off too

Brighton are one of the clubs we should probably copy now - seems like under Potter they developed a system and De Zerba just fit into that same system, so they don't have to suddenly change everything.

The thing is the budget was already there in the summer, it was spent on Maupay, Onana and McNeill Now as good a player as I think Onana is, it was vital to get in a centre forward. Thelwell's priorities were wrong, we really shouldn't have bought Maupay and McNeill in preference to a centre forward. If we go down this season, the reason will be the lack of a centre forward. Even the signing of Onana should not have taken preference over signing a centre forward.

He's utterly hopeless.

Can imagine, all that crowing about "he's filled 27 different roles since he's been in charge".......we get relegated and a few of those roles will be the first to be getting binned off as part of the cost cutting exercise which we'll will have to do due to the wages we pay.

He's an absolute clown and even if we avoid relegation, needs to be binned off as he was hired by a clueless board.
