Transfer hits and misses under Thelwell:

Hits:
Onana
Garner
McNeil
Tarkowski
Gana

Misses:
Maupay
Vinagre

In the middle:
Coady

If Maupay had performed according to his Brighton mean he would've scored 8-9 goals this season but it hasn't worked out. I'm still on the fence about him at this stage TBH

Even those in the ‘hit’ list - bar Tarkowski had swathes of the season where they offered very little.

…that’s simply a list of his transfer business. It doesn’t highlight one catastrophic void that nearly got us relegated;

In 2 transfer windows he failed to bring in a conventional central striker. He gambled on DCL being fit when the world and his dog knew that was never going to be the case. His failure nearly cost us.

I'd agree with that although I would say Garner and Onana were hampered by injuries in parts of the season. McNeil started playing well as soon as the manager was changed. Gana indeed has been inconsistent and I hesitated to list him as a hit TBF

….he nearly got us relegated with his gross negligence of not bringing in an effective striker in 2 windows. As you say, Maupay was a poor signing but let’s not forget we started last season with Gordon as a central striker. Maupay was not only a dreadful signing, he also came in way to late.

He doesn’t deserve any goodwill as far as I’m concerned, he’s very much one of those accountable for us nearly going down.
What funds was he given for a striker? Was he allowed to spend 20-30million to bring one in?

Absolutely unacceptable to have left us in that position. It's the hardest position to play in the hardest league and there's a reason strikers cost big money. To be relying on Dom was neglect, especially given we won't play Maupay's strength

While i agree with you, he did need to also strengthen those other positions.

This coming season we look far better for it.

Only a fortnight to the end of this financial FFP cut off...so there should be a few twists and turns.

Reported that we were close to landing Abraham for £35mil and had different obligations offered for Gallagher, Beto and Sarr last Jan.

It always surprises me that the only player weve done a deal for well in advance of a window was Bent. Little bit disappointed thats not the case this window and expect there will be a lot of drama before the trigger is finally pulled.

No mate.

Neal Maupay, not in anyone’s world, fitted how we play. He was the worst ever signing for our team.

This kopite allowed us to play the majority of the season with no recognised striker

We spent £50m+ on Maupay and Onana (with wages of at least £120k a week combined) both of which haven't influenced us successfully to any degree this season.
I get the aim of buying Onana on the way up, but never ever at the expense of the gaping hole up top.
Should we have went out with £35m+ for a striker last summer we couldve had a completely different season, and every man and his dog could see this at the time.
Add throwing proper money at Ajax for Kudus and Thelwell wouldve been held in high esteem and investment couldve been in place long before now.
But he didn't, so massive pressure on him to prove he's not a dud this time around.

I’ll be surprised if we sign anyone without Prem experience tbh.
Which may be sensible for next season.

Time for more adventurous signings the following year if safely mid table and mediocre.

Just seen that the government have relaxed the work permit rules and teams can sign 2-4 overseas players without the requisite points.
