If we are too patient then we run the risk of relegation, we were a gnats hair away from it last season, which will be an existential threat to the club in general.

I agree that some of the hyperbole around Thelwell, to which I have contributed admittedly, is often over the top but this is the internet so I'm pretty sure it's not 100% real and is magnified by the culture we have on public forums. However, even the good stuff is just OK. McNeill was hot garbage until Dyche took over, Garner is held up as something after only a handful of games and even Onana has flattered to deceive as often as he has actually delivered. As I have said before, the problem in this squad is goals, I assume Thelwell has seen that too (unless he is as bad as some would have us believe) and has failed to do anything positive about it in two windows, we can't afford a third. I don't see our midfield chipping in with enough goals to counteract another season with malfunctioning forwards. If it isn't resolved this window then I am struggling to find too many scenarios where we stay up and that will be on him, hands tied or no.

There were many factored to our on the field performance last year mate, recruitment and being short up front was just one. No condoning it, was a risk that backfired with DCL and proved poor decision making.

Im not saying hes the best thing since sliced bread, just that hes shown signs of making the majority of the decisions right, while bringing down costs and bringing revenue into the club - im very much looking at his performance from the limits hes working in and the outcome of that. id also acknowledge his mistakes - we are woefully short of goals and the miscalculated DCL.

If he does the same this year, then ill give him pelters myself. But he produced 8 players with a negative net spend and added value on and off the field (all bar Maupay for me) while also reduced overall costs. Thats not bad and we need more of the same. If we keep doing that and stem the flow of blood we will incrementally improve, anyone expecting an event is going to be disappointed it will be a process. Its about corporate recovery now - thats the goal and hes contributing to green shoots in terms of cost control.

Im going to be patent with him, ongoing assessment on a number of fronts.

Perhaps we should start a "where in the world is Thelwell" Thread

This bozo never even got the customary honeymoon period like Walsh who won the transfer window and Brands who kept making offers they couldn't refuse lol

I understand what you are saying but I think some of your analysis is optimism rather than demonstrable fact. For example, you say he has added value on the field. This may be true in a couple of positions but as a squad I can't see how that can be argued, we conceded less but we also scored less, claimed fewer points and finished lower in the table whilst often playing without a striker and then without any fullbacks. We have energy in the midfield but very little creativity and we now have a substandard group of players in the heart of defence (this may change by the end of the window, admittedly). Some of that was down to Lampard but even in the table you posted of where we would be if only Dyche's games counted we were 15th which is one place higher than we finished under the Benitez/Lampard nexus.

As I mentioned before I'm also not sure that the 8 signings were all that successful either, McNeill, Garner and Onana all have potential but that may or may not be realised, Vinagre didn't play (Garner didn't play much either - even when fit for a while), Gana and Coady were OK and are/were on big wages and I think we all agree on Maupay.

I don't think anyone reasonable expects an "event" as you describe it, but we probably need to see more progress than we have so far to be as comfortable as you are. Jury is still very much out for me and this window, with the size and quality of our current squad, is about as important a window as I can remember. Thelwell needs to get it right, he'll have nowhere to hide in September if he doesn't.

Anyone not concerned with how this bell end is shaping up (again) so far this window needs to have a long, hard look at the last 2 seasons.

The manager needs bodies in the correct positions through the door immediately in order to try and pull together some sort of strategy for keeping this squad of clowns and losers in the league again.

Patience was preached all January and look what happened there.

By value, I mean investing, I’m fairly confident that McNeill, Onana and Garner have appreciated. Essentially buying a player is an investment and you look for that to appreciate. If you compare that to day previous investments like Mina, Gomes or Gbamin, the value is obvious. So both on the pitch the value is appreciating while of 5he pitch the costs comparatively are lower Comparatively. I mean trading let’s say Garner for Delph or Onana for Allan, is better value illustratively overall.

Not sure I’m being optimistic, not a huge believer in the DOF at all and I certainly questioned the Brands cult on here - that was just wired people backing him, while he toropeded the club - even today people back him. Which makes the the melo drama over Thelwell, just weird or maybe an extension of that entrenched position. Or getting criticism in early after being burnt on their opinions on Brands.

Jury is out for sure on Thelwell, I’m not saying otherwise, I just see some of the stuff posted as lacking much insight and a bit melodramatic and I’m not sure it’s wholly fair or objective - don’t mean you personally like mate! ;)

It's almost as if we've appointed a DOF that has virtually zero clout anywhere in the football world and who pretty much all of it has never ever heard of, isn't it...
