2024/25 Kevin Thelwell

Absolutely get the disappointment in here, but given the budget and circumstances he's had in the 3 years here he did a solid job. He had some flops undeniably, but you'll never find a DOF with a 100% success rate.

The big financial mess has been done before him that still is a frustrating thing till today that hinders to make more additions that were more than urgent with injuries.

All in all, I have to say despite a 100m plus in transfers, 20m less on wages, the squad is still thin, but better than 2-3 seasons ago.

Personally like Dyche before him i think his role is untenable now.

Moyes walked into town and ripped up the plan for the window. Once someone in authority is undermined in that way and its allowed to happen, its game over.

I actually dont think about Thelwell as being good or bad, i dont have any beef with him and you can point to good or bad things in very difficult circumstances.

But it ultimately comes down to this equation for me:

Hes out of contract in July.

Is he the absolute best DOF Everton can get in July?

If the answer is no - he should go.

Its that simple.

If what we are meant to beleive about Moyes having more say then i think it will signal the end for Thelwell. What we need now is a clear plan of who will be overseeing recruitment and work needs to start now to get players in by pre season.
There will always be some sort of DoF/Sporting director here due to the nature of how TFG run their clubs. I think it just needs to be someone who is more experienced and has a stronger character than Thelwell who seems a bit of a wet lettuce imo.

As soon as we're confirmed in the Premier League for next season we need to start moving on targets. If he's not going to be the DOF we need to get someone else in to do that.
Thelwell seems to be incapable of identifying or signing targets . difficult to see what purpose he serves so I think he should be on his way now before he screws up an important transfer window this summer.

Pretty clear at this point that anyone with negative thoughts towards Thelwell...

...well their opinions are limited and they should stick to offering views on the pitch.

Was it Alex Ferguson who said a 50/50 success rate for signings is decent?

Thelwell isnt far off 100%, while having nothing to spend and using a negative net across business every window. Even this window we sold players and signed Alcaraz on loan.

If your opinions are echoed by people who actually should know (CEO, owners etc) he will get a new contract, won't he?

I actually think Thelwell has been a bit better than average in the circumstances he has to navigate. No DoF gets everything right. Our PSR problems (not his making) have seen us miss out on several good players. Some he has added are thriving after a managerial change.

I think his future depends on Moyes feedback to TFG. Moyes is a notorious control freak who has never played super nice with a DoF but if Moyes and Thelwell can coexist you keep KT. If they can’t, you don’t - assuming Moyes keeps us comfortably safe and continues to get fans on board.

If they habe decided he is going would do it now or atleast agree with a new dof so can talk to moyes look at the squad ect and get to work faster.

On the fence with him gets the same treatment as dyche yea has been hard. Has done good with sales bougjht some good players in. But still has not fixed the problem with pace, still dont have a natural right winger. Just becuase hard does not give him a pass fully if he stay fine, still has to show alot more for me

It seems to be that the upturn if form changed the approach to the window, and rightly so.
No point paying over the odds for players we may or may not want long term just to have enough to stay up when it looks like we have enough to stay up under Moyes with what we've got.
Alcaraz is a good signing too, definitely has something about him

I can understand mixed opinions of Thelwell given that his signings have had mixed results (this is true of every DoF of course though).

It’s also the case that a DoF can only really be assessed with years of hindsight- in 5 years time we could have Braiden Graham and Justin Clarke running rings round the PL and that will go on his account just as Branthwaite continues to accumulate credit for Brands.

What I don’t understand is a section of people who can watch the likes of Ndiaye (15m!!!), O’Brien, Garner and even Beto performing great on a Saturday then demand with certainty that he be fired into the sun on Monday.

Just don’t understand people who are so narrow minded that they will scream bloody murder about his relatively few failures and completely ignore some very good bits of business who, unshackled from Dyche, are only looking better and better.

Mixed opinions are part of football but I swear I seen him spoken about in tones reserved for the likes of Kenwright, Moshiri or Benitez. When he’s been way more part of the solution than the problem the last few years.
