There's no question he's got talent but having seen him in person at games, he has a long way to go before he's considered a Premier League starter. Ease him in gently with minutes here and there, start him in cup games but don't launch him in at the deep, especially over better players in his position(s). Alternatively if the club feel he needs to experience the league, loan him to one of the promoted sides, preferably Wolves

Wolves wont be taking our cast offs, they will compete for actual players this summer.

Tbf they've done that all season, I'd put money on them easily staying up if and when they come up

Some money behind those boys and of course the Mendes link helps them more than anything, be interesting to see what happens there.

Dont forget access to the Premier League gives them an instant boost of at least 150m a season when you factor in TV money and increased sponsorship.

You're basically saying they are one of the best groups of academy players ever.
This isn't as far away from the truth as you may think. In my memory it's by far the best collective of young players that we've ever had at Everton. We've had better individuals maybe in Rooney and arguably Barkley, but never a group like this. We had 5 in the U20 world cup winning squad, 4 of whom started the final. How many clubs (around the world) can boast this fact in their history. I wouldn't be surprised if the answer was none. And this season we've had 6 players consistently picked for the U21s, plus Vlasic who has been included in the Croatia full squad before Allardyce stopped playing him. I don't know the stats but I don't think that there can be many clubs, if any, across the top 5 leagues in Europe, that have given as many starts to as many players in the 18/21 age group in this current season. or in any of the last 10/20 seasons for that matter.

Nobody is saying that they should all be regular starters next season, although I would argue that Holgate is probably one that should be. What we are saying is that they should have a place in the squad, starting certain games and being introduced from the bench in others. Rotated properly with the view to giving them all the individual game time they need to develop. There's a togetherness about them that is clearly evident and I haven't seen that consistently in an Everton team for a long long time. If we can somehow develop them so in 2/3 years time many of them are regular starters, I reckon we will then have a team challenging the top 4.

It's a once in a lifetime opportunity that we have right now. I doubt we'll ever be in this position as a club again. Which is why our new manager has to be one that is not just prepared to develop young players, but has it as one of his priorities.

Yeah, this could be the closest we get to a Class of 92*, we need the right manager and squad to make best use of that.

Oh.

*Edit: for some time

Interesting comments on Wolves here. Personally I have been impressed by their organisation and determination thus far.
If they continue in the same vein next season and beyond I can personally see them establishing themselves among the elite clubs at the top of table, the result of which will be to remove that last European place out of reach of the rest of us.
This will in turn leave the remaining rump with little to play for apart from pride, avoiding relegation and hoping for a decent run in the increasingly devalued knock out cups.
On Dowell, he has continued to show the same talents and flaws on loan as he did before. He is still at this point a long way off becoming an established top league player.

I'm not sure why some posters are saying Dowell isn't motivated?

He's played practically every match for Forest before their new manager shored up their defence and shunted him to the left wing (where hes never played before)...forest fans have been saying he looked knackered but they needed him in the team :o

Clearly if he can play this many games in the championship he can come into a match day squad for us and rotate for 20 games a season.

Kenny, Dowell, DCL, Davies and Vlasic should all be rotated in/out next season and Lookman and Holgate should be starting most games.

The only 2 who people (not only me) are saying should start are Holgate (as you mention) and also Lookman.

All of Dowell, Vlasic, Kenny, Davies, DCL, Baningime (and others ive probably forgotten) should be squad players rotating in/out.

We should attempt to have 11 players at u21 age all in and around the squad to rotate to build a future team gradually....some will prove themselves (Holgate) and others will need time.

Interesting to see us linked to Maddison at Norwich who plays a similar role to Dowell BUT who could easily join the squad and rotate...theres more than enough games for all of them.

You sound like you are doubting that I accidentally forgot to include Lookman, as though I did it deliberately for some nefarious reason. What a strange thing to accuse me of.

Didn't mean to make it sound like that, sorry. I was just explaining why I was including Lookman when he wasn't in the quote I posted. You're right, it would have been a strange thing to accuse you of.

As for the pure fantasy, I don't believe it is. I said they shouldn't all start, but should be in and around the squad. What part of "7 or 8 young players should be in our squad not necessarily playing every week and by no means all at the same time" sounds like fantasy to you?

Maybe "pure fantasy" was hyperbolic. But to me "in and around the team" means contributing, and having that many youth players making meaningful contributions to a team competing for a top 6 place really would be historic. I'll be ecstatic if it happens, but I believe it is unlikely.

Do you dream of picking 3 numbers on the lottery or something? Strange guy.
I'm not sure what you mean here, but I don't play lotteries. A mug's game.

But hey, I hope you feel better after your rant.
I don't :(

Have a nice Easter.
Thanks, you too!

Thats the fear for me that just 1 more club to have a big takeover or in Wolves case help through a super agent bringing in Tevez/Mascherano style deals will effectively remove any hope of european football for a club like us.

Easier said than done. I heard people say the same thing last year about Huddersfield, and the year before about 'boro. Also heard it about Newcastle, but only from Newcastle fans so I guess that doesn't count. They probably will be better than the average promoted squad, but I'll be surprised if they're competing with us for signings, or too good for our cast offs.

I really like Maddison from what I have seen and would be very happy yo see him come in. It does raise an interesting question re Dowell though, most notably if Madisson is worth 25 million then why would we let Dowell leave for a nominal fee? Their figures are very similar and in open play Dowell is probably even better.

Im not sure anybody said Huddersfield would be any good, personally.

I will watch Wolves with interest, they have already got some excellent players that we would love to have, whether they can make the step up off and on the pitch is yet to be seen, it certainly wont happen overnight, but as I say I will watch them with interest for sure.

Anyway, as for Dowell, hes gonna struggle, I suppose it will depend on who the manager is, who our DoF is, what sort of reports we have, if any, from his time at Forest. The lads got bags of talent, but his massive weakness is the fact that he hardly ever imposes himself on the pitch, well thats what I think anyway, I would be lying if I said I had seen loads of the lad.
