Koeman: "Barkley looking for a new challenge"

"We know it's about 18 months of contract," Koeman said. "I think it's not the priority now. Of course, in the new year, we will have talks about his situation and about his future.

"But the priority now is playing and winning and we will see what happens in January."

That was back at the beginning of December 2016.

Poor lamb.

He pays an agent to sort that, Not Everton.
Not much of an argument is it? Simple fact is if we'd have offered him a contract 12 months earlier than we did & he turns it down, we can sell him from a stronger position. It's poor management from the club.

Maybe we did but the fact remains we should have offered it 12 months earlier. If he'd have turned it down then we would have been in a stronger position to sell him. That is we're selling him with 24 months left on his contract, not 12.

Hindsight.

It makes no difference does it though? If he publicly states he wants off he could be signed up for 10 years and that paperwork will mean diddly squat compared to what people will pay for him. You have no strength when a player wants to leave.

The club left it late. They should have done what they did with Lukaku, offer deal 30 months out. If player turns it down they've got 2 years left on contract & you sell him from stronger position.

Hindsight.

Doesn't change the fact a player wants to leave though, like I say, the power is with the player regardless of the years on his contract. He wants out, that paperwork is worthless.

Why does he want out? That's a decision only him and his agent know at this stage. It's certainly not because of lack of ambition with Everton, we're moving forward, if he wants off the bus as an Everton fan with over 100k a week offered to him then he's no better than Nick Barmby.

Just disagree.

If we did offer him a deal 2 years ago, with a higher basic, and a longer term, and he then says he wants out this summer, the price we would get would be the exact same as we will get for him anyrate.

The lad wants out.

You are in a better negotiating place to get the fee you want if someone has got 2 years left rather than 12 months. Do you think we'd be offering £45 million for Sigurddson if he only had 12 months left on his contract?!

We'd be offering less if he said he wanted to leave.

Also, who gives a monkey's over how much we get for him? Just get the rat out of the club.

Of course it wouldn't be the same fee, the longer this rumbles on with only 12 months to go the less we get.

Of course you can't force someone to sign a contract. What you can do is make a contract offer in 2015/16. How does it make the player feel when you're offering Lukaku a deal 30 months before his contract runs out but only offering you one with 18 months to go. Everton should be doing their job, if players decides to leave then fine.

The 30 months was the exception...most talking on new contracts starts 18 months or so in advance. Everton have done absolutely nothing wrong with regard to Barkleys contract...it was offered/discussed with him and his agent in good time. Koeman said as much when doing exactly what he should have done....that was answer questions about Barkley as honestly as he could. If his answers to the press included criticism of Barkley, well, there isn't really any other way to answer 'Why was he subbed?' is there? In any case supporters with the slightest knowledge of football would have understood exactly why Barkley was subbed or not selected. What is disrespectful to his employers,Everton, wherever you stand on Barkleys quality/skills etc.,is Barkleys complete silence on a subject which requires his serious attention. It is downright disrespect on the part of Barkley and his agent, and is certainly not what we would expect from a real Evertonian. There may be reasons outside football for Barkleys attitude...if he's in any bother this bother could certainly follow him anywhere....its a small world these days.
The sooner he is gone, the better, even if we have to take a hit on the fee, just get shut and let that be an end to all this .

The club may have been a tad complacent thinking because Ross was a local lad, had come through the ranks, was a blue etc that it was a forgone conclusion that he would sign a new contract.

Obviously it's just my opinion like, but I still think the relationship between Koeman and Barkley had/has become too strained, and that's why Barkley wants out.

Don't agree, the lad was our second most valuable asset, you don't leave it to run down you try to do the deal early. Different if player is older and not worth too much.
