It depends how good he is really. So far we haven't seen enough to know if he's likely to be a Gerrard or Rooney, it would be a gamble for both clubs. Maybe we will get some money from somewhere so it's not even considered.
He is back-up right now. Maybe he could bring 40m in the future... but what if we won't have players on Pienaar, Arteta, Saha level then and it will just allow us to use this money similar way to funds we got from Rooney's sale - to strentghen a relatively poor squad, not a team of quality players we have now?
We have our chance now, and with Fellaini doing as well as he did this season, Rodwell is only a back up for him. Maybe their style is different, but position quite frankly is the same, and neither of them can run a team like Arteta.
I consider Rodwell to be the biggest talent we have at the club by quite a distance, there are few players around with his raw attributes. When he reaches 21-22, I think he’ll be far better than anything we currently have on our books. And I don’t mean as a holding midfielder, I’m talking about an all rounder.
I wouldn’t be keen on selling him, I’d much rather sell a squad player or two and raise money that way.
In case of you missing it, check history of last 2 summers - we added a quality, while balancing the books.
I would love to be in situation when we just can spend even 10m net every summer, but apparently we are not this kind of club.
I wasn't here when we were selling A.J, but I was here when Lescott saga took place - most of you saw it like a tragedy, not believing that we will use this money properly to make a better squad overall. And Moyes just did it.
I would love to have Rodwell here for next 15 years here and getting him time to develop properly over next 2-3 years... but I can see a situation when selling him would allow us to be even better and more balanced team.
Reign it in a bit there Ghost. No need to go down that route.
Take this...
and read this...
So a big fan then? Do you even know what Nil Satis Nisi Optimum means???
He's a new Blue, nothing wrong with that is there? We all have to start somewhere, and believe me, Stinger knows his football.
Well, I'm sorry mate - but I've been supporting Everton through thick and thin. Been down there when we may have been relegated. I was there when we were winning stuff too. I know my history and I know my club.
Sometimes I feel prior knowledge on what it's like to be an Evertonian is required, instead of comments that have no soul.
The poster clearly doesn't have that knowledge and perhaps he/she need to discover more about this club and what it means to every single one of those fans on Saturday who felt something most people never feel.
It's something I am passionate about. I reacted the same when that lad reckoned we could build a team out of college athletic graduates.
No harm intended, but if the lad goes on the ride to learn about the club, then that's a good thing.
Ok maybe he does, but calling Rodwell a backup is a massive insult to him, the academy and to football.
The lad is a star in the making, that is what he is. You don't sell your stars if you want to win trophies.
There you go again ghost.
Why can't you debate anything and still respect each others opinion without questioning somebodys loyalty to the club, their status as a fan, or their experience as an Evertonian?
Many lads here were watching Everton before others, including yourself, were born, so what makes you such an aficionado?
Don't you think that everybody here wants the best for the club, or do you perhaps feel that you are on a higher level than most?
That's how you seem to come acoss ..... often.
I'm just saying, wind it in before it gets nasty in here.
I am with you though, I don't want Rodwell to go, nor do I consider him bckup, as I have already mentioned in the thread.
I have been with Everton now for 25 years, and now about all the highs and lows. Everyone has to start somewhere on the rocky road that is supporting Everton.
