Watched "Miami Vice" (the movie) since it appeared on Netflix and I was up late. The whole movie never really clicks...it ticks all the boxes of a crime/drug/cop movie (it's got action, fast boats, drugs, sex scenes, and big-name stars, etc., etc.,), but nothing seems to come together. Gong Li, though...very alluring in her role. .
Yeah, I read the book and was skeptical of how the film would follow the book, but the film is really great! Very moving.
Watched Significant Other, a sci fi set out in the wilderness. I enjoyed it, some genuinely suspenseful moments and took its time to set its stall out, which I like. Decent performances from both leads and a beautiful setting.
A few criticisms:
I absolutely hate invincible antagonists. What's the point? Had flashbacks of watching Life, though that was an absolute tyre fire in every other respect aswell. If the antagonist doesn't experience any form of struggle and can't be killed, it destroys a huge source of dramatic tension. It's why Alien and Predator are the GOATs of this genre, they were mortal beings with needs and goals of their own, set into conflict with less powerful but resourceful protagonists
Also, the monologue where the alien has the panic attack was a little goofy

Just watched Asteroid City, I’m still trying to work out if I liked it. Parts of it are funny but the overall idea for the film is very unique compared to anything else I’ve seen
Was a decent watch, the main actress had no luck tho sadly.

Her spleen had been removed after the 2008 car crash, which increased her risk of serious infections. Dean's death occurred shortly before the international release of Triangle of Sadness.Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian wrote that she "was a true star-in-the-making. Her loss is a huge one... [she] had a singular style and enormous promise.

Just got in from watching it.
There's a lot in those three hours as well. Lots of political stuff, more than I was expecting.
I know a fair bit about the technical side and they got that spot on I thought.

Yeah was just a re-watch m8, Saw it a few times over the years tho, loved it that much.

Matinee, Joe Dante's love letter to childhood and the schlock movies of the 50s and 60s. Despite critical acclaim it never found much of an audience. Came out in 93 and may have been overshadowed by some of the big hitters that year (JP among them), which is a real shame as its a deftly written, charming comedy with some great performances, not least from John Goodman in a rare leading role, and Robert Picardo as a neurotic cinema manager.
Its foresightedly meta, and a treat for cinephiles and while it does over extend itself a bit at the end its well worth a gander.
I've got it on a beautifully restored Arrow blu ray.
