Last Film You Watched

I watched The Wrestler -"risible" wrestling based hokum about a supermarket worker who always wanted to be a wrestler, when he finally gets his shot it turns out he's a bit naff and should have stayed in the supermarket. It was a bit crap.

For a good film about wrestling, please see Shane Meadows 2004 short "Northern Soul" starring Toby Kebbel.

You might be best watching the first half of 'the wrestler' before the second half, and then judging. Or not.

I'm always intrigued as to why you watched a third when the first two were terrible.

Bart and the Electrified Cup Cake come to mind.

Just because I wanted to complete the trilogy I knew it would be pants but at the back of my mind a little part my psyche still wants to be scared and hopes maybe just maybe the 3rd in the series might have a scene that makes me take notice, alas no as i suspected it was bobbins.

I watched a documentary on Netflix called "The Bridge" about people commiting suicide by jumping from the Golden Gate bridge. Quite disturbing as they had camera's on the bridge for a year and actually show footage of people jumping and interviews with friends and family. Wish i hadn't watched it to be honest

I caught it as well after a friend recommended it.

Drive : 6/10

Drive is like a movie from the 80's. All style over substance. Its Flashdance without the flashiness or the dancing. The story takes a backseat, and the washed out, sunset tones of West LA take the wheel. Its a quality production no doubt. A triumvirate of Perlman, Cranston and Brooks was a real coup for the film. Massive actors with massiver acting chops. Next big thing Gosling and Hollywood sweetheart Williams as the struggling single parent and there's all your bases covered. Now, as for the plot...its thin. Thinner than thin. It's the oldest play in the playbook. Its that kid that's repeated Primary School so many times he started growing facial hair. You could drive right over the whole story and not even really notice. Not that our protagonist drives all that much. He's more into staring wistfully into space for long periods of time, one word answers and knowing glances down at his chest. I wanted to shake him. I wanted to slap him. WAKE UP FFS! Your getting paid for this! This is just an old car with a new paint job. Everyone plays the game. Everyone dies. Cue hero driving off into the sunset to die, and the right person getting away to live their lives away from the cess and filth of our own moral decline. Or something like that.

Britain's Carey Mulligan that mate, not Michelle Williams.

I watched this film the other night. I wasn't that hopeful, as I dont really get the fuss about Gosling. He just does the same moody act in everything he's in. However, I thought the film was very good. The violence was pretty shocking when it reared it's head, and Brooks and Perlman were superb...and it had great incidental music (which always helps).

It's a defo 8/10 for me.

Reeet then. Just got back from the Cinema. Nothing but praise for The Grey. Over the top at times and has pacing problems for a spell of about 20 minutes but i have to say the final third had me gripped. Neeson seems to be improving like a fine malt whiskey with age and would recommend this to any action/drama film lover.

Watched 'The Big Year' last night...

Not great, but at least a bit more grown up than I was expecting from Jack Black & Owen Wilson... Steve Martin good as always and John Cleese narrating.

Odd story, apparently a 'big year' is when a birdwarcher spends a calender year trying to see as many species of birds in North America as he can... Wilson plays the record holder and bit of a celebrity twitcher, Black's a divorced computer programmer looking to do something with his life and Martin's a retiring high-flying CEO type that's wanted to do it for years, but always put work first.

Characters all likeable, good camoes from Anjelica Huston, Dianne Wiest, Brian Dennehy and Corbin Bernson amongst others...

Bit slow though and no real moments where you'll be in tears/pissing yourself laughing.

6/10
