Blimey all the doom and gloom on this thread; look at this point in time we are selling no one, period. We are not playing badly; reslts will come; the youngsters will gel; the team will be a force to be reckoned with and no one will want to leave because we are moving onwards and upwards;
Lets start having some positivity; say no to the negative and yes to the positive; yabbadabbadoooo !
Its all too easy to shut your eyes and say its not going to happen, when everything suggests it is. We have it in us to be a good team, but we are at the moment a selling club. If a club comes in with a good solid offer for Rodwell in the summer, he will go, i'm certain of it. And thats not limited just to him, you could say the same for Baines, Arteta and Coleman, all going the way of Pienaar.
Call me a cynic but there's not a great deal of loyalty in Football any more. And quite rightly players will seek to advance their careers, and who could blame them ?. Now without a change in ownership, we aren't going anywhere fast. The top 6 are already catered for.
We have neither the squad, nor the finance to challenge Arsenal, United, Chelsea, City, Spurs or (Sadly) Liverpool over the course of a season. Expect Villa, Sunderland and Newcastle to spend heavily this summer as well, that will more than likely see them improve, we can't say the same for ourselves. We have a decent cup run in us, as we are more than a match for any team in a one off game.
But the players we have who i have mentioned are European quality players, some even Champions League quality. And they may not go this summer, but they will eventually unless we start to pick up and show some ambition in the transfer market. Will they be satisfied with a good cup run once in a while when there are European teams and $$$ knocking on the door ? Highly contentious.
As for him being "tied down" to a contract until 2015, its not worth the paper its written on. If a player wants to go, ultimately theres not a lot the club can do. An unhappy player is not going to produce his best form, and in all honesty why would we want to keep any player who doesn't want to be here.
So when a large offer is pushed under the nose of BK, and the player indicates a willingness to leave, believe me, he'll be gone regardless of whether he has 1 year or 4 years left on his deal.
