We're on the same side here. But I would suggest that to say we don't get more critical of history the further away from an event, that's naive. We obviously do. Historians build upon the research of others, over and over. New stuff comes out all the time.

Fair enough.

Can we bond on our hatred for the texas school system blatantly politicising history in high school text books that are used across the US and are as biased as the liverpool echo, though?

In january 1914, ireland was where everyone in britain thought it would kick off.

It was seen as a much bigger problem than the balkans.

And incredible to think that both have only relatively recently arrived at a kind of uncomfortable peace within their borders.

Wasn't the USA already at war with one of the many claiments to mexico, though?

Sort of. One of the revolutionary generals (Pancho Villa) crossed the border and raided a town in New Mexico, believe in revenge of a Yank arms dealer that was working against him. The US military pursued him for a while in retaliation, but were unable to capture him.

So, not really on either side of the Mexican Revolution, just a co-belligerent.

Oh God yes. We just need to get a few RS to help us out with how to march and make ace banners.

As strange as it sounds, that's it. The system of formalized "Alliances" meant to protect Europe from going to war, actually caused it.

None of those countries wanted a war with each other. The greatest f up in history.

By the way, as much as one hates to say it, you know what is the biggest lesson drawn from WWI that still haunts us today?

Prize for anyone who gets this right.

Never team up with France.

Every one of them is a thousand times the man you are. They went out and died defending their country and you slate them because of the school they attended. Vile, absolutely vile.

They were there defending their class's privileged position as masters of an Empire. Your serf mentality is abhorrent to anyone living in the 21st century. get off your knees.

Interesting angle D.... - a life lost is a life lost regardless of whether Officer or not, perhaps they were defending the status quo but that does not make their sacrifice any less meaningful in the same way that a German life was no less valuable than a British life.

Are we valuing life by a political or patriotic belief? How can one have less value than another (opposing) belief?

Myth 8. - No-one won.

Must admit, I have never heard that one before. I thought everyone knew Britain (and allies) won and Germany lost? Or is it just in the UK that we were tought that?

Everyday, you must kick yourself knowing that you weren't born in Stalin's Russia, and therefore unable to be his propaganda officer.
