Lads stop pretending digne is suddenly awful

He really isn’t
Digne is never awful but certainly has not been as good since around this time twelve months ago.
Up to about then he was really good and both himself and JR had a purple patch for a while, but that disappeared after Christmas and Digne has been playing moderately at best.
There are a few incidents of where he is beaten too easily... Villa away for one.

But, all players go through bad patches, it happens.

He was awful against Millwall in the cup a few years back.

Well he got that nasty injury last November and should have missed 3 months. Up until then he had been superb last season. He came back in 6 weeks and was suddenly playing left wing with a back four of CBs - and first game back he goes and provides that first-time assist on the volley for Iwobi v Wolves. He was definitely up and down and the team was playing a totally different style to how he’d left before the injury.

But he is a very good player. Not been fantastic up to his standard and I don’t think he’s ever been used exactly right. But we should not even be considering selling a player of his quality when we don’t even have another left-back at the club

This is madness, Digne is a good footballer. He maybe isn’t as good a defender as we would like but his overlapping and contribution going forward makes him deserving of a place in the team on ability. I can understand his frustration at how he is being asked to play under Benitez at the moment but he is a player being paid handsomely to carry out the wishes of the manager and that is what he needs to do for the overall good of the team.
We are not in a position to start getting rid of players who deserve to be part of the first team squad, we have too many who aren’t good enough and they need replacing first.
We need to stop creating problems and start solving them.

Thing is mate, on that ‘overall good of the team’, asking Digne not to attack while our attack instead gets channeled through Coleman and his Phil Neville tribute act crossing, that’s not for the good of the team. That’s on the manager to realise. It’s friggin stupid.

You are absolutely right that Digne needs to improve his form because he has been poor. But he’s been told to not do what he’s good at (and he’s still set up some brilliant chances even then - can think of that one v Spurs with the volley cross and then the one v Brentford for Rondon in the first half) and also been taken off set-pieces to boot; and Townsend is on them and has been dreadful too with them

So the overreaction on here is ridiculous. Whatever the reasons for him being dropped last night, that should not suddenly equate to him being flogged at any price. For one he’s 28, a very experienced and good player in a position that is crucial to most good teams, and two he’s on a long-term deal

Only one defender in the league contributed more assists than him last season

Is there any stats for how many times those defenders got skinned on the inside, didn’t track their man, failed to stop a cross or gave away an innocuous free kick on the edge of the box? No I didn’t think there would be. Football isn’t a stats game, get off WhoScored and watch the matches.

Where does it say that Digne has been told not to attack? What I have read is that he has been told to consider to a greater extent when he should attack, and when he should ensure balance. The same goes for Coleman. Do not think Benitez has told Digne that Coleman is allowed to attack, but not him. But I think he has instead said that he should to a greater extent ensure balance when Coleman attacks, and vice versa.

Digne and Benitez have both said that he’s been told to do a lot more defending this season.

Yes, the balance has to be there but in most games Digne wasn’t crossing the halfway line enough. That can be on the player too, but if you look v Brentford, Coleman was constantly getting forward yet digne was not been used at all

No it isn't. Id have dropped him a while ago. Obviously isnt just him. But we hardly ever keep a clean sheet because he is another poor defender. We hardly have a decent defender who between them know how to keep clean sheets.
What you hope for in digne is him being on it going forward. But wether we like it or not we have to tighten up at the back. We're norwich and watford levels for goals against.
Technically a good player. If he's up for it. But he is over rated on this forum.
I want Everton to get nasty at the back and start hurting when not keeping clean sheets.
Digne isnt that. But i can level that at most of them.

It is difficult to say without knowing exactly what has been said.

Well we’ve been told by digne that he’s been told to concentrate on defending first, that’s fine btw - I have no issue with it

However when we’ve been playing Rondon up front and Townsend central, that’s a striker who needs quality service into the box to make up for his short comings and our best crosser other than Digne playing a position where he can’t cross from.

A switch to 433 would provide us with the defensive basis for digne to be able to get forward
