There’s teams of data analysts working at almost every major club who’d probably disagree with you.
Of course they would disagree, I am questioning their entire existence!

At the very, very most stats can give you a teeny tiny clue on what type of player someone is. That is about it.

Honestly its something I have banged on about for years and years no doubt boring everybody along the way but if you were to search for stats on here the results will no doubt involve me moaning about them and the reasons why.

So I will just say football does not work as a stat orientated sport as the game has far too many variables to provide accurate analysis. The only stat that matters is the scoreline.

Fair point. The clubs that pay their wages and the managers, scouts and directors of football who use their data on the other hand would probably disagree too.

I’m sure you know better though
Football is not this mythical entity.

You can grab stats from anywhere and model them to your liking, especially when it comes to sport.

Players are not robots, they are human beings. Can we produce stats on a players mentality? What his home life is like? How he gets on with his team mates etc etc.

Clubs do it as they will do anything to seek an advantage even if the results are minimal.

If you are looking for a left sided winger who creates chances then you can fire up your computer and find a player in the Ugandan league or something then you can go and have a look at him but it would not tell you that all the right backs in Uganda are crap, that his striker is boss and that he only performs in Uganda because he gets home sick etc.

No idea why I chose Uganda.

I have worked in data analysis and close to it in other roles for 20 odd years. Why should my feelings on the topic not be any more valid? It is not data I would be confident in providing with any form of confidence.

You have got me started now! I could bore people about this for months. I will take OPTA down one day.

It’s easy to bore people when you chat absolute wham to be fair.

That post has got to be one of the biggest collection of straw man arguments I’ve ever seen in one place.

You seem to be under the impression that saying stats are a useful tool in football (which is backed up by the fact that nearly every top level team have advanced data analytics teams) is the same as saying “with stats you never have to watch a football match ever again!”

Sorry. No.

Manager's have to manage. It's their way or eventually the highway for the player.

Yeah and crap managers should be called out more for doing crap things.

Anyway, we don't know for certain what's happened with Digne. Know his rep spoke to the Athletic, but other players' reps did too. If the going to France without the club's permission thing on his day off is true then we can brush it under the carpet I'm sure. Rightly punished etc, move on.

But of course all our fans now want to sell him because their brains are made of mush.

I thought you said he’d been banned from attacking?

I said he's not been used right and stand by that. His average position (where he's having most of his touches) is way back from where he can be most effective. The fact he's still created the second-most chances shows how crap we are at playing attacking footy.

Btw he's also, madly, our best tackler in the squad this season. Won 19 out of 34.

Yes this. Stats told us Sigurdsson was the most creative midfielder in the league when we signed him.
you know that stats can be used to back up or dismiss a point, that's all

They're a supplement to what people can see.

So I think Digne has been in poor form. I don't think he's being used correctly going forward. The fact he's still our second-most creative player says that he's quite good when he does get forward and also that our attack is crap.

But if you actually watch him you’ll see he can’t tackle and gives countless free kicks away in dangerous areas by booting people needlessly?

How many assists in the last 12 months? Genuine question

From 7 Dec 2020 to now - 3 Premier League assists (3rd in the squad after GS (4) and Doucoure (6)) from 52 chances created (14 clear of anyone else and only 15 of them from set-pieces) from 35 games in total.

His big chances created is 8 - three clear of second-ranked Richarlison (5).

His expected assists (i.e. quality of chances created) stands at 4.

But I do watch him which is why I said that it's pretty mad that he's our best tackler in the squad.

It's probably a quirk of how the stats come together/how Opta define a tackle (I won't get into that, I'm not that much of a nerd) but 19 out of 34 is actually a pretty high percentage. It's like around what Kante wins.

EDIT: To add to this though, you don't want your defenders attempting this many tackles because as you rightly say they're more likely to concede fouls in dangerous positions than say, a midfielder or winger.

Come on Digne your futures in your own hands.

Get on your hands and knees and grovel like you've never grovelled before and there may still be a road back from the transfer list.
