2021/22 Lucas Digne

I think Digne is a absolutely top Left Back. But the style we played since second half of last season, was very anti-football and requires our LB to be more defensive. It's no coincidence that his assist dry up in 2021. He had 0 assist in 2021. This season, well, he was asked to play defensively. But he has been below par since second half of last season.

I don't like the fact either he or Benitez is creating more problems for the squad. But I guess "some players who didn't follow his tactical instructions" comment should be about Digne, hence now, Benitez has dropped him.

….players will always question tactics and challenge what they are being asked to do. It happens every day at every football club, some would say it’s healthy to have such debate. The difference here is we know Benitez not only seeks confrontation, he’s thrives on it.

I dont want to sell him. I want him to acknowledge he let everyone down and get back into line.
We don't know what he did. All we know is whatever happened, Benitez decided to leave him out for it.

Can Benitez acknowledge that he let everyone down by starting 2 in midfield at home to Liverpool, losing 4-1 to our biggest rivals (our worst derby defeat in history at home???) and going on a terrible run that had us 16th in the table (and we're still in that terrible run btw).

Same applies.

In fairness to Digne, he’s hardly the only one concerned by Benitez’ tactics.

what I meant by "creating more problems" is that we do not have money to strengthen nor have an adequate second-string natural LB. Getting rid of Digne (or Digne wants out) in transfer market (not sure if this will happen?), means buying two more LBs, when we have other areas to strengthen.

I think Benitez seeks confrontations at every club he has been in. But I'm not sure if this is the correct period to do so. But that's my opinion. I mean, there are managers and players do not get along and things work out in the end. I just hope this will be the case.

Just seen the Athletic report. benitez and digne have been having conversations quite regularly about his role (this should be a good thing), but it boiled over on the training pitch before the Arsenal game.

Digne needs to get on board but, also, he has every right to challenge the manager, especially this manager, who is rubbish.

I think his one of the best players at the club. but for me you don't change a winning team, so has to sit on the bench if he does come back in to the squad at the weekend.

But I do watch him which is why I said that it's pretty mad that he's our best tackler in the squad.

It's probably a quirk of how the stats come together/how Opta define a tackle (I won't get into that, I'm not that much of a nerd) but 19 out of 34 is actually a pretty high percentage. It's like around what Kante wins.

EDIT: To add to this though, you don't want your defenders attempting this many tackles because as you rightly say they're more likely to concede fouls in dangerous positions than say, a midfielder or winger.
This is the point I think. The best full backs don't tackle much. They harry, they forced the wide player back inside, they block crosses or intercept. The only time a full back tackles is when the wide player has gone past them.

How do the athletic know? How would the subscription based news outlet conveniently known the ins of a drama story..

Regardless I'll hold judgement on why Digne wasn't on the pitch, could be many reasons. He hasn't been in great form, attacking or defending.

But he has been a good left back for the majority of his time here and I expect him to come back into form.
