Lukaku to Spurs

What do you expect for 20m?

I honestly can't think of a better striker that has gone for 20m in the past 5 years. Andy Carroll was 15 last summer. Jelavic was 7 in January. Strikers are worth their weight in gold.

It's either take a huge risk and spend 10-15 million on a lower league (Dutch, Belgian, etc) striker, spend pennies and live with Kone running our front line, or go all out for Rom. If there was a better striker available for 20 million I'd be all over it, but I just don't think there is, at least not when accounting for our need of youth. We need to be aiming for 2015/2016+ in my opinion. Mainly because Ross and Stones and McCarthy still need to mature.

20m is a lot to spend on a 15 goal striker. I expect a striker at 20m to score around 20 to come good for us. If we are going to spend 20m, spend it wisely, it really needs to be worth it. We don't have a lot of money, remember that.

I do remember that.

Which is why I'd rather spend 20m on 20 year old Lukaku than 18m on 26 year old Bony.

And if anyone thinks we can get Bony for less than that, I suggest that they are doing some sort of amazing glue, because Swansea spent 12 million on him before he scored 16 in 33. (Lukaku got 14 in 30 so far).

We have to spend on a striker, I think, or get very lucky picking up a risk. A top shelf striker is the difference between 5/6 and top 4. The problem is that everyone realizes this now, and the demand for strikers has combined with the influx of oligarch/sheik money to lead to strikers being massively expensive.

If we want to establish ourselves as a major force - we have to take the risk on an unfinished product that may come good, because we simply cannot afford a sure thing.

That's something I agree on, although it's still alot of money. 18m on Bony would be madness. Some strikers are destined to do well in small teams..

He's scored 15 goals in 30 games. A full season would have seen him scoring about 20.

I don't say it's bad, but for 20m I expect more. + he only shows up every third game.
With a limited economy like ours, I don't think it's a good fit. There are better options out there.

For 20 mill i'd want a much better player, he's not agile enough and we need a striker to be nippy, i'd have him on loan though for another season

they paid 12m for him and hes now a proven scorer in the PL so its gonna cost a good bit more to get him.

That makes it even more mad for a club like us. If he actually could be something, bigger clubs than us would be all over him. That's something I'm not aware of

Swansea bought a striker for 12 mill who at the moment has scored more than Lukaku and your saying we can't get a striker for less than 20 mill who could offer more goals than Lukaku, sorry mate but that is like saying no one can do a better job than moyes at Everton with our limited funds, your so wrong

The lad was out injured for a while, he only came to us the end of the transfer window so never had a preseason to gel with the team and yet people are moaning about him not getting 20 goals. Seriously people, get a grip really.

The lad is only 20 and will get better, not worse. Plus, the fact he dedicates his time and life aiming to be a better player physically, ability wise and studying the game. 20 million is a bargain for him, and waiting for him after the world cup is a big risk and a mistake in my book.

We really should have money though. Aren't Cardiff getting £60mil. for finishing bottom this season? That means we'll be on around £78mil (ish) - as I believe it's 1.2million extra for every place. That's the wage bill there.

Factor in season ticket sales, any extra revenue (the fact that, relatively, we're in a pretty good financial state), plus the sales of Fellaini, Vic and Jeavić, which gave us just under £40mil(!!!) in total.

He has scored more in more games. And came from the Eredivisie. And is 25.

So yeah. I'm saying we pay a premium for the sure thing rather than take the gamble of 12 million for Bony or 8 million for Altidore.

Lukaku scores bucketloads in the Premier League. Everyone acts like this is an easy and regular thing. How many strikers have scored 15 in back to back PL seasons? How many of those are 20? He's worth 20 million. We should have the money. Good strikers are worth spending big money.

Look at the R/S - a 25million striker has propelled them into the title race and is now worth 75? 90?

Not saying Lukaku will follow that path, but I just do not understand why people would rather take the risk on an unknown Dutch League or Belgian league striker over a kid that scores goals every other game and is bound to simply improve.

How many other 20 year olds have scored that many goals in consecutive seasons in the PL who haven't been deemed 'world class'?

Interesting question. I won't argue which of these is world class, but here is a list of players that have scored 10+ in consecutive seasons in the PL at a similarly young age*.

19 or younger for 2nd season at 10+ goals:
Owen, Cottee

20:
Lukaku, Rooney, Fowler, Heskey

21:
Cole, Le Tissier

22:
Shearer, Defoe, Yak, Sutton, Agbonlahor

*Some scored their early goals in the first division; this data is not exhaustive and ignores other leagues, so no Henry, Cantona, etc.
