If he has a rubbish world cup it will only compound what I actually believe about him - that decent defenders can keep him quiet - Lovren had him in his pocket for the whole 90 minutes against Southampton and when he needed to have a little more guile, touch, and finesse he looked pretty much like had nothing.
Its a bit like buying a porsche with teething problems, some days it runs great, other days it doesn't start, but hey its a porsche isnt it? For me we need a car thats runs every time you turn the key.
we need a Japanese ?....Honda?

Southampton away I said. Pretty much like many of his away performances - he only scored 5 goals away from home and for me lacked any real threat in many of them.

The 3 games I mentioned - one being WBA he miscontrolled a pass on the half way line which led to their equaliser. Southampton and Palace who both pressed hard - he doesn't have the assured touch to hold the ball up not the accuracy of passing to retain possession - his passing accuracy was 65%.

Saying that hardly anyone came away with any credit is not justification for a player not being able to do the basics. I wasn't expecting him to go on a run and beat 3 men and score, I do expect him to be able to use his 6ft 3 frame and size to look after the ball and take pressure off the team.

There's a good reason that Mourinho isn't keen to retain him, he loses the ball far too easily. We have full backs who bomb on when we attack, we can't have a centre forward who concedes posession so easily.

How many times do people need to tell you on this thread?

We all agree that he has his flaws, and is not the finished article, he is 21 years of age not 29 in his prime.

Most of your concerns can be rectified with coaching and experience, i would blow all our budget on him, and then enlarge the squad with some frees and promote some of the youngsters.

A back bone of Stones, Ross and Lukaku would set the team up for the next decade and is a exciting proposition imo.

Tell me or offer their opinion?

This whole "not the finished article" phrase has to be up there with "world class" as the most often used but most misunderstood phrase in football.

The finished article version of Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer, Robbie Fowler, Ronaldo Brazil, Louis Saha, Thierry Henry etc etc was not a player who got better because they learned how to control a football and lay it off accurately. Each and every one of them had an impecable first touch right from the get go.

Wayne Rooney has not improved his touch from when he was 17 with us - not a chance, if anything it has dropped off a little, Alan Shearer and Fowler at 21 were using their first touches to take the ball where they could get a shot away - not to actually get the ball under control.

Lukaku's touch is not going to improve by any significant margain (and it does need to improve significantly) that is what is going to stop him becoming a great player. That is why for me £20m is a ridiclous amount and % of our transfer kitty to spend on him.

At the risk of repeating myself this is a rare opportunity to acquire a world class striker at a realistic price that , if he goes on to sharpen as he matures , offers us a potential 40% sell on windfall over the next few seasons . It is what most of the supposed bigger clubs do if they have confidence that a) Player has real potential to improve exponentially ....... B) Is prone to ride tackles ( athletically sound) , not pick up spate of injuries. C) Not disruptive to squad dynamics, not an arsehole. Got to be a reasonable risk/reward scenario for the future of the club but ,obviously , not at any price but somewhere up to Fellaini money. This would show real ambition and intent for club to compete at highest levels . If the asking price reaches funny-money levels it is not on as good risk/reward bet. My gut feeling is Lukaku is a banker of a player for the club that buys him at the price level I indicated and whilst on board will fire the ball into the net on a regular basis......... I continually read comments like lazy, never where he needs to be for the final ball ,poor with his back to the goal etc......... He is a phkin beast ,hungry and is as natural a lurking sniper as we have enjoyed and is still growing into himself , genuine 20 goal a season threat.....................

You're essentially saying "this 20m player isn't as good as this 50m player so he isn't worth 20m."

When his first touch isn't stopping him from having a goal scoring record which easily justifies 20m+ (see below) then why is it so important?

This is what I said back in Feb about this same issue:

The amount of optimism people have about how "two 10m players" will turn out is just simply staggering. Check out this list ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_top_Premier_League_goal_scorers_by_season#2012.E2.80.9313 ... in recent years I can only see RVP, Bent, Henry, Nistelrooy and Ronaldo getting 15+ in two consecutive years. I may have missed one but that's not really the point -- the point is that it's a very short list of players. (Suarez will be added on this year.)

There are WAY less players who repeat 15+ (forget about 20+ ... that list is even shorter) than I think most people expect. 20m+ is a steal for a player who could still appear on this list with a few more goals this year (at 20 years old!). Lots of teams buy 10m players every year -- almost none of them end up with repeat appearances at the top of the goal scoring charts.

I see where you are coming from but people are expecting him to have some massive improvement on what we see now and say he will be worth double - he won't. He may get more tactically savvy etc but what you see as the footballer is what we are going to get.

My take on it is this - if we are able to provide good cover for him so he can get dragged off when he has one of his "can't be arsed" games then great. For me I fear he already thinks he is big time - yes he has scored some goals for us but he has also had some complete and utter stinkers.

I expect to see a far better attiitude and appetite for the game away from home, its all very well doing it when goodison is rocking or we are in front of sky cameras, for me there have been games when an 8/10 performance would get us goals and he has delivered a 5/10 performance.

Its clear we need a goal scorer - and the return of 15 goals has excited people - but I will be honest Yak provided a better than 1 in 2 season return under a less striker friendly set up.

If we pay £20m for him I expect better than what I have seen from him, simple as that.

Pure tosh mate, could compile a massive list of 20m strikers who havnt done what lukaku managed in the prem already, 20m is a steal for a player who will consistantly net 15 plus goals at west brom or us, hell how much did spurs spend on 2 in lamela and soldado, carroll at the rs and hammers, torres at chelsea and a host of others, lukaku at us would have us year in and out in the top 4 battle, any one else is russian roulette

This thread needs to die, as in the words of Mr T, 'you a fool' if you think we will sign Romelu Lukaku
