I am not sure I agree with all of this Davek. It is not obvious he wanted away, what's becoming quite clear was that he was always going to take the decision at the end of the season. I might be old fashioned but I always have an admiration for players/managers who see out their contract and then decide what to do next. I have more respect for that than people signing a contract then looking to move on.
As regards he won't play again. Well I think this assumes Martinez will reproduce what I consider to be Moyes's biggest mistakes, namely becoming too close to experienced players. I think Martinez grasps that for whatever reason (which is our useless board) we will never have the finances to compete at the top end. So an approach that looks to stockpile older talent won't work. I think Martinez is more pragmatic and understands the need to rejuvenate the squad with younger players.
In a years time Baines will be 31. Most modern fullbacks, particularly in Martinez's teams have to very fit. Baines is a very fit lad currently and has no difficulties getting up and down, but in 12-18 months time who knows? I don't think Martinez was bluffing when he said he could look to use him in midfield going forward. We'll have had a year to look a Garbutt and see if he's up to Premier League Standard for Bournemouth.
The elephant in the room for all of this is Oviedo. When he has played he has also done very well and looks a natural fit for left back. I can't think of a single game he has played where he has let us down. He seems a great pro and if he can get his fitness back this pre season I suspect he will also be pushing Baines.

Davek was sure he was off mate and had made his mind up about him
We'll have to agree to disagree on the way he viewed the whole situation, but I respect Dave for sticking to his guns on this
If Garbutt does now sign a 5 year deal, has his year on loan and then comes back to get a regular role at the club, it will fly in the face of everything Dave was saying. That's a lot to digest when you were so strongly in the different direction
That being said, Dave could very well still be correct
I personally think that should Garbutt sign, he will come back to us following the loan. As you say, Baines will be a year older at that point and if we somehow manage to get into Europe this season, Martinez is going to need options for rotation
I think Oviedo will be moved to a different position in all honesty
I certainly hope so. It would devestate me if we sold him
Wow and you actually really believe that...and lo and behold - he is off.
You're supremely naive if you think he's on his way back any time soon, because if he's half the player you think he is he'll be snapped up by suitors rather than returning to the fold.
He is now being put in the shop window for an extended period. Effectively, he's on a transfer list with the added bonus to Everton that he'll be getting the opportunity week in week out to attract a buyer.

He is reportedly given a 5 year deal. That's the kind of deal you give somone who you see as a 1st 11 player for years to come and an asset you need to protect. Besic, Stones, Lukaku....and lo and behold - he is off.

There's no way you are right unless he fails miserably at Bournemouth,
Give it up. I thought he was a goner too and very happy to be proved wrong.
I doubt it.There may be some merrit to what he's saying, in the sense that Garbutt might do very well at the club he gets loaned to and they might test our nerve by putting a bid in
It then comes down to whether it's a good bid and what we can offer Garbutt in exchange for him staying
It'll be interesting stuff, that's for sure
I doubt it.
If he where to fail miserably and Bournemouth don't want him and that would be a big risk to take considering we didn't really think he was good enough in the first place we're then stuck with a player on a 5 year contract.
A Championship team aren't going to pay a left back what we're paying him.
No - He's been locked down for the next 5 years because Martinez believes in him.

Because a premiership team fighting for survival would never agree to that with someone they where relying on as their first choice left back. This isn't a loan deal whereby Everton get to recall a player who may be urgently needed. The club are effectively closing that possibility off and parking him at a point in time when we are very comfortably off for LBs. Baines and Oviedo are competitive for that spot and will be for the long term.
The 5 year deal thing is insignificant. He's tied down to Everton and the fee will be a large one if/when a bidder now comes in. I'd imagine that would have been agreed with Garbutt and his agent by offering him a very decent wage package (something Everton can wear in the short term by getting the club who loans him to chip in on wages and take some of the heavy burden of it).
At the very least this is Garbutt now with as much chance of shining and attracting a huge fee as it is a chance of Garbutt being loaned out and biding his time waiting for matters to change at Everton.
Everton do think he's worth it but cant hold him down at Goodison, hence the deal that satisfies all parties. It's not one though that means he's part of Martinez's plans, more likely that he's an asset ready to accrue value for a sale...that's the way clubs like Chelsea and United and City have operated with these loan deals to PL clubs. They dont want them back, they want them to increase their transfer value.Because a premiership team fighting for survival would never agree to that with someone they where relying on as their first choice left back.
Oviedo hasn't had his contract renewed and I doubt he will. Martinez will let him go on a free to maximize his earnings and allow him to choose his next club. Baines and Garbutt will be our LBs next year. Baines will definitely still be our No1 and probably not just for that year either which is why a 5 year deal is important. However until he can win Baines' position and be our starter there will be plenty of opportunities.
A 5 year deal isn't insignificant. If he turns out rubbish that's a lot of money in salaries if no-one is prepared to meet what we are paying or we will have to pay him to leave.
If Everton didn't think he was worth it then they would have just taken the money at the tribunal and been done with it - use Oviedo (probably giving him an extension) and Galloway as backup like they are already doing and wait for someone young to come available.
