I'm still hoping he was left out of the derby for his own protection, if Baines still isn't fit and Garbutt isn't on the bench today, that's very troubling.

I think he was left out of the derby as Oviedo is far more experienced and usually performs well when he's in the side, mate.

Garbutt will get his chance, just has to be patient.

Sorry, I meant the fact that Garbutt wasn't even on the bench. I agreed 100% with Oviedo starting over him.

You may agree with Dave. But if you were in Garbutt's boots, how would you like the way things are perhaps having to wait another few years before getting a real chance to be selected consistently as first choice. He needs to be playing to show what he can or cannot do, the lack of game time will also impact on his England career. So realistically the way things are at Everton for his career he will have to move.

IN two years time bet Baines will be more or less out of it and we may just have Oveido.
I don't agree with the harshness of the way Dave makes his point. I understand it from Garbutt's position and don't think he necessarily owes us loyalty etc. Ultimately if he wasn't good enough then we wouldn't be keeping him either.

It's a difficult decision for Garbutt but Martinez' hands are tied at this stage. He can't prioritize him over Oviedo or bow to his demands for all the reasons stated and Garbutt just has to decide what is best for his future. I do think Martinez really rates him. He's the only one of the U21s this year than has started more than one game (did Browning even start against the RS or was it just as sub) and Martinez has always been full of praise.

The question Garbutt has to ask himself is would it be better next season being backup to Baines with Capital One Cup games and the occasional games where Baines plays midfield/injured or playing for a poorer team possibly in the championship as a regular starter. The season after that Baines will probably get moved permanently into the Barry position and Garbutt would be a regular starter.

There's not a lot of free left back positions in the top teams since they all have young fullbacks.

Cheers Mate, good post. We will have to see how it pans out over the new contract that has been drawn up for him.

Wow Ralphy that is one from the blindside. Must admit I felt quite often that Oveido was better played more upfront that at LB. It was more in that position he was playing when his leg was broken and he was putting in good performances.

His basic passing isn't good enough for Everton, especially with the way we play now. He's not quick or technical enough to make up for his lack of height/strength either. Besic and Barry both got booked last night because of simple misplaced balls by Naismith and Oviedo.
We get the ball in decent areas and then lose it too easily because our players can't pass, which in turn leaves us massively exposed, especially considering Barry doesn't have the pace to cover the ground to plug the holes left back the full backs bombing forward. That's why he's getting booked so often, cos he has to just bring people down instead. If Nais and Oveido could pass though, we wouldn't be losing the ball in the same pattern of play and wouldn't be so open defensively.

Also defensively Oviedo made that ibe look like Ronaldo last Saturday. He doesn't offer enough of a threat to make ibe go the other way and isn't strong enough defensively to impose himself on the winger.

If he signs a contract we should give him game time if not only use him if its an emergency. We should not be blooding him for some other team. I wouldn't even play him in u21s between now and end of season. If he bides his time here he will get chances if he moves on I think he'll regret it.

I've always thought of Oviedo as a sort of swiss army knife player, useful in many roles if not perfect in any one. I thought he was fantastic defensively last night, and I don't agree with those saying that he's not quick enough. Oviedo also isn't as creative as someone like Baines, but has a killer final ball. He's also getting back his sharpness, lets not forget he was out for some time with what could have been a career ending break.

Not sure where that leaves Garbutt. We'll probably see more of Baines in midfield, either Barry's role or in attacking mid (like he played against Newcastle) which should open up room for Garbutt and Oviedo to get chances.
