Ability wise, there's been better players, but Neville on his best day worked hard and always took his role seriously. I think he genuinely considered it an honour to wear the armband and relished the added responsibility it provided.

He was a man who took his diet and training very seriously, showed up to work on time, offered help to any who needed it and just generally did his job as well as he could

Yes, he sometimes said some odd things and also was so wedged up Moyes backside he could smell what he had for breakfast, but he also took his job seriously and didn't treat his time at Everton as a paid vacation as some of the other "respected veterans" who came by treated it (Gazza, Hughes, Ginola etc)

Oh yeah anyone else think that Mccarthy has next captain written all over him, can see him in that role for a good 8-10 years or so after jags

Yep good shout, he has settled in brilliantly and looks massively committed from the first to the last minute in every game I've seen him, can't really fault him. I reckon he'll go on to captain club and country eventually.

To be fair, Moyes is right in a way - the side he had pretty much played without any effective tactical guidance for his whole tenure at Everton.

What Martinez is doing different is fine honing the ability with usefully timed substitutes and a positive mindset, which is what you want a manager of a talented bunch of players to do.

Moyes is really starting to piss me off with his comments :

"He is doing a very good job," said Moyes. "He has very good players there. I always told them they could play without a manager because they are very well organised.

"But Roberto is doing a really good job keeping it going.

"I had a great time at Everton, it was a great club for me at the time in my career when I left Preston North End. They were fabulous to me - they gave me a chance to succeed the best I could at the club. We had one or two early years at the start when it was a bit up and down but overall we had a pretty good level of consistency after that and tended to finish pretty well in the division.

"I don't think it's any advantage there's a new manager there and he's got his own players in as well. I do know a lot of them, I probably brought most of them to Goodison, if not them all, except for the recent ones. They're all really good players and I've got a lot to thank them for because they helped me to win games."

Says the man who's just inherited the current champions of English football. Unbelievable jeff.

Prediction time.

1-1 at the half.

65th minute. Man Utd scores. Moyes being Moyes, he pulls off Rooney and throws on a 5th defender.

70th minute. Everton scores. 2-2 now. Uh oh Moyes, look, it's your micromanaging biting you in the arse!

85th minute. Everton scores again, 2-3. Moyes has that look on his face. You know the one I'm talking about. Rooney in a fit of rage on the sidelines. Everton shoots up the 3rd on the table. The media's storylines involving Moyes and Everton are unraveled. Cats and dogs coexist peacefully. All is right with the world.

Book it, done.

So in other words. 'I'll have most of the credit for what's going on over there, please'

No you won't Ginger. Anybody that's watched us and seen what Martinez does in game knows our gaffer, a proper one BTW, deserves all the credit for whats happening at GP.

I only hope he's here 10 years to show the world how good he is.

In all those great Everton captains that was posted, which of them won the most honours? Phil Neville by a mile. He made a mistake with his top 10 comment but you can see what he was trying to say, he just failed in his delivery. He was great for the club during that era, but has now thankfully moved on. Don't get why people knee-jerk about Neville and try and make out like he was an awful footballer. Pretty impressive what he's achieved in his career considering how some view him on here.

TBF, Neville was never more than a squad player during his OT career.

He won all his Title medals through the efforts of others....he was pretty average, IMO
