Manchester United

I dont remember United spending hugely in the early Fergie years, as in, pre title. Bear in mind, Trevor Francis was £1m in what, 1978 ish, City spent some daft money in the 80's, (£3.5m on some junk of a player iirc).

Happy to be corrected, but I reckon he got Bruce, McClare, Viv Anderson, and a bit later, Hughes back from Barcelona. Oh, Paul Ince was pre title I reckon.

I might be slightly out here buf Schmeichel, Kanchelskis can't have been cheap. Then he got Keane, Cole, Paborsky- all for big money.

Oh sure. But folk were saying he was spending big from the get go. I am not sure he was. In fact, in his book he says how surprised he was by the size of his early transfer budgets.

Listen i have no axe to grind if you think the media fawn over United then thats your opinion , i was born a few years after Munich and yes i can see that there was a lot of sympathy for United after the plane crash , they did have a very good team at the time as you will well know, you are entitled to your opinions but i dont think the media fawn about United as much as people go on about , i mean why would they the only reason they would do it would be to make money

'...they did have a very good team at the time...' No mate, they had an absolutely EXCELLENT team, that was torn apart by that air disaster. Make no mistake. As an Everton fan, I was in awe of that team, it was that good.

And what I have stated is not simply opinion, but fact.

'...i dont think the media fawn about United as much as people go on about , i mean why would they the only reason they would do it would be to make money...' The only major sports medium pre-internet (notwithstanding the fact that there were other newspapers) was the Manchester Mirror. And that paper remorsely pushed/advanced your team. I do know what I saw in that paper for decades...

Sorry to barge in but just seen Scott Mctominay is 25 years old this year. 25. My head is blown. Thought he was like 21 and a prospect hahaha, can’t get over how he’s nearly in the peak of his career and not a prospect like I’ve been thinking all season

Fella, Why are you on an Everton forum giving us all lessons about Uniteds history?
No one is interested. Try these forums instead you might get a better response:

And give us all a bit of peace & quiet.

Schmeichel, Irwin Pallister Bruce, Ince Cantona Phelan, McClair, Paul Parker iirc all bought for big money at the time.

Pallister was big, at the time. Ince also, but turned a big profit on him.

Not so sure about the rest. Cantona was £1.5m tops.

Pedantic time from me, but he is 24.

25 half-way through next season.

Sorry mate.

But, your point stands....im shocked too. I also think he is a good player.

Feel like I am defending them here ffs. But havnt they had a youth team player in every starting league line up for about 5000 games or sommet?
Hmmmm.... That's a bit of a factoid.
They use John O'Shea in that who they bought at 17 and put him in their academy.
It's in the starting 'squad' (including subs) not the starting line up as far as I am aware.

I dislike United but am not really fussed about City.

In the 70's and 80's United were still the biggest club in the country. They benefited hugely when they won the first premier league when serious money started getting pumped into the game but the difference is, they were already huge. City weren't by any means a small club but 18 years ago they were 2 divisions below. They got basically given a new stadium and became an attractive proposition to a very very rich Sheikh who has basically treated them like when you cheat at football manager. Of course other clubs have always and will always spend but the two clubs aren't really comparable.

Yeah I had to find a way of emphasising it mate, Normally I’d be the same but I had a narrative to run withlol

Agree I like him as a player just had it in my head he was still only young, only 2 years younger than ward-prowse
