Sports organisations are businesses like no other businesses...as much as owners would like that not to be the case. Never ever will a suit be seen as THE central character of a major sports club. No owner, no CEO, no DoF.
No, it makes it unassailable: manager in this instance of the greatest NFL team of all time has full control.
Thank you for underlining that.
All of the unsuccessful ones, too.
Thats not exactly a cogent analogy.
I’ve not been on the forum long but I’m guessing this chap doesn’t ever have one good word to say about anything Everton F.C. related...brands turn now for giving an interview
Fat Sam is still around, may change our perception of success
@davek is right. The focal point/public face of the most important component of a football club, the first team, is the manager. Or coach. Delete at will.
But that doesnt mean that other bodies in the organisation are not vital. Be they a DOF, the club secretary, and obvs, the owner(s).
The manager will take the stick or plaudits depending on the results, in the same way a DOF will take the stick or plaudits depending on the quality of players bought and sold.
Cant really see the issue myself. Perhaps the clue is in the name. We are a football CLUB.
This is a terrible argument. The Patriots have no general manager. Belichick makes all roster decisions, so he is the de facto GM. The only rare cases where the coach is the most important person in an organization happen when said coach is also the head of player personnel, akin to the DoF role (Gregg Popovich in San Antonio, Pat Riley in Miami when he was coach, college coaches like Nick Saban, Roy Williams, Coach K, Bill Self, and so on). Everywhere you look, the most important man is the one controlling the roster, not the one coaching them on the field.Who's more important at the New England Patriots: Bill Belichik or the Patriots' GM?
The game has changed, and I'll posit it was Ferguson who changed (broke, actually) the old model. Ferguson was so good that the game evolved; too much money got involved and too much was at stake for teams to stay stagnant, and so they became "lean" to use corporate-speak.
This isn't much unlike American TV; Seinfeld not only perfected, it killed, Yank tv "sitcoms." Seinfield was the last sitcom and the first "reality tv show" (disregard the facts, this is fact), and TV was never again the same because viewers would not tolerate anything less.
Ferguson had a similar effect in football and I'm doubtful you'll ever see another like him.

Yes, it was info that he need not have shared with us regarding the architecture of the deals cut and the diplomacy behind it.
It sounded more like a corporate seminar than a football man trying to clarify in broad brush strokes to fans what the plan is for us...which is all his interview should have been about if he had to give one at all.
Not entirely sure the point you are making if I am honest.
I’m sure Brands is experienced enough dealing with other clubs to know what he and cannot say about them so as not to cause offenceI have to agree. I’m more excited by Silva and his development then Brands. It does seem a bit cultish. I’ve no arguement with anything he has done so far with recruitment or turnover in the first team. Don’t get me wrong i want him to be what others are currently advocating he is but it would be fool hearty at this point to say he’s been brilliant. We’ve got a 2.2 draw at Wolves thus far. The players mightened work out etc. it seems we’ve learned zero from being in the exact same spot last year with the same hopes and expectations. It’s a wait and see.
I agree, I question why he is front of the shop here. Why does he have to have a media profile? Doesn’t make sense to me, but maybe I’m tradititional. Either way I didn’t like his I’m the hero approach and name dropping Utd and Barca in I would assume are ethical negotiations, that won’t be appreciated by either club and I would assume be taken note of by the wider footballing community.
One thing I did notice in the windo was 0 recruitment at underage, which is a departure for us.
