We’re all going to have our gut feelings about this at the moment - and mine is that he’s walked rather than been pushed. In which case, this likely speaks to more chaos behind the scenes than a plan being carried out, in my view.

No he was sacked. He went back to Holland after the match and was summoned back on Friday.

Here you go:

Recruiting a successor to club captain Seamus Coleman has been on the club's agenda for a number of years but new manager Rafael Benitez was not prepared to sign a player this summer that did not meet his exacting standards.

Money was too precious and Benitez, who has only just inherited the right-back issue, was unwilling to risk squandering the club's cash.

The manager, club sources have confirmed, was not fully convinced on the merits of meeting the asking price for Denzel Dumfries, for example.

We’ve been needing a RB for about 3-4 years. I’m no Benitez fan but it’s a bit ridiculous putting it on him.

Benitez in charge of January, the likes of Longstaff and Manquillo in, gets sacked when we're hovering above relegation zone, next manager comes in right before DCL and Richy leave. Hello Doncaster away.
This defo strengthens Benitez's position.

Brands is obviously the scapegoat here. Clearly though he his either entirely responsible for the awful transfers we've had or else he's been consistently overlooked by managers and the owner. Either way is not a good look for him and either way is reason enough for him being sacked. Give him full control of a club and he might do well but his spell in charge of us has contained some of our worst business in our history so it is what it is.

You can certainly make excuses for him but that doesn't mean he's done a good job. Same as Benitez, can't totally control the state of the club but hasn't done anything to help the situation.

The thing is Brands could go back to Holland, or somewhere else in Europe, and in a few years we will all be gnashing and wailing our teeth watching that club produce a good team for nothing.

Meanwhile we'll be watching £20 million pound man Longstaff get run round for 90 minutes by Charlton's midfield as they stroll to a 0-2 win.
