If the buck stops with the DoF as @GrandOldTeam has stated, how do you think he's performed since he arrived?

8th 12th and 10th, and we have a situation where the finances are that out of control we spent £1.8M in a summer transfer window.

We dont have a consistent style of play and that's down to his apparant inability to have impact on who is hired as manager.

I'm really only stating the facts here. The feller has failed. It is a simple enough conclusion to come to given what we see before us.

….if the DoF is accountable, I think the squad is a bit of a mess. Too many poor players on rich contracts. The lack of pace and creativity in wide areas was so obvious & it’s pleasing that has at least been addressed.

I just think it’s too simple to say the buck stops with the DoF. If his remit was transfers then he could be held accountable but it’s clear now the authority lies with others. Replacing Brands does not change the process, it does not make the problem go away.

Either give the DoF the control of a DoF or give him a different title.

Brands has done loads of interviews.

Weird this.

The last time he did anything with the official site/club channels was in April, which was the first thing he'd done in nearly a year going by the search on Everton's site

Other than that, the only 'statement' we've had from him was a brief paragraph when Benitez was appointed.

The club's communication is crap (let's hope that improves with the new PR manager they've just hired), and this is a small example of it.

Do you have apart time gig writing speeches for Trump? The ability to throw shade in the sentence above is so blatantly obvious it surely cant be a true opinion. I dont think anyone would argue that Benitez is a divisive appointment - this conversation is almost proof on its own, so its not really evidence of a cult like behaviour, also I am not sure who barricaded themselves into a home, nor even why that would be relevant or what the point would be, other than to squeeze another pejorative phrase into the above remarks. The polarised view that we are either optimistic or 'going down' is offering a strange choice to make.
Seriously if you dont have a job writing for the far right political groups you should consider it as your talents are wasted on GOT.

Just call him a bellend, like everyone else does.

…I’m not defending Brands in the least, indeed I have no strong views on his performance but I’ve become convinced the transfer system at Everton is very much centred on the Manager & even the owner.

Brands is on record as saying he cannot bring a player in without Benitez’s approval. Let that sink in, he doesn’t bring players in unless he gets a green light from the Manager. Meanwhile the Manager and owner can bring in players.

The likes of @davek ‘loudly‘ posts that it’s all Brands fault. He selectively notes most of the good signings are down to the Manager whilst the bad ones are Brands. He even claimed DCL as being a Walsh piece of business when it’s known Unsworth went directly to the board and recommended the purchase.

So, the process as reported is; the Manager & Owner bring in players whilst the DoF recommends players that are only acquired if Benitez/Ancelotti et al agree. We can guess who’s responsible for identifying a target but we don’t really know.

At Everton the power of transfers rests with the Manager. Those who argue for a transfer process led by the Manager have got it at Everton.

Folk also argue about our lack of transfer income, but this isn’t down to sales negotiations, this is down to purchase negotiations. It’s not rocket science that ordinary players on extraordinary contracts are impossible to shift.

The assumption is Brands puts them on big contracts, I have no idea if he does, it would be good to know. We have a DoF but not in the sense other clubs employ one.

As I say, I’m not defending him but I don’t think he is as empowered as some think in the transfer process at Everton.

I think this is completely accurate, but you forget a key point - Brands accepted a contract renewal based on what he knew his job to be, with his job title being Director of Football.

Therefore, you have to judge him as a Director of Football. And if you do so, I can't come to any other conclusion other than the man is a complete disgrace at his job.

….he’s accepted the contract for DoF at Everton & he knows the scope of that role does not include power over transfer activity.

If we all just blame him 100% for the lack of balance & quality in the squad we’re not challenging the issues accurately.

Brands is on the board, he clearly has authority within the club but we are aware Managers at Everton have final say on transfer targets & there are clear indications Moshiri deals directly with agents to bring players in. it’s a weird process that we deploy.

Monchi held a presser the other day. Spurs doing this with Paratici.

It's really not hard to do.

But then again, what's the point in trying to explain a plan when there clearly isn't one.

been begging for this for a long time, transparent communication.

Its painfully obvious we are rubbish at this but it would go a massively long way with helping ease fans and understanding motives and moves.

That last bit Eggs I the clear thing for me, either give him the control or give him a different title. Don't really see the point at the moment of him if you want me to be honest, I don't see anything which a DoF (just from the outside looking in) should be doing being in Brands output.

DoF is a bigger remit then just transfers, but its probably the most visible. If he isnt in charge of that fine, we cant beat him with that stick but while he has the DoF title he SHOULD be in charge of that

...or give him the boot?
But the state of our finances we probably couldn't afford to pay him off.
Moshiri...up to now, in the manner of Monty Burns, as been running the club on any whim that strikes him and Brands is somewhat sidelined, but seems happy enough to play the well paid (and with an ego boosting title of director) Smithers to Moshiri's Burns

Edit; of course he may do shed loads of work behind the scenes we dont know about - put perception is all.

….I think he’s probably busy. Just listening to the Rondon interview, he spoke to Benitez & then nearer deadline to Brands. Him and Contract Dave might be the main link to agents & lawyers once the deal is agreed. He’ll also be the one who reports back to the Board.

If he didn’t do that type of thing, then somebody else would, it’s just that the Manager is the key player in endorsing transfers even when Brands suggests them.

I'm certainly not a fan of Brands but in fairness to him he did give summaries after the transfer window I think in his first two years here.

I'm not sure why they've stopped this communication because I did appreciate it at the time.

I can’t give him a pass but when it seems like the last two managers have bought the players , or a substantial proportion of them im not sure how it’s all on him. Like you say it’s a mess .

People can rightly mock Myers for what he's doing now but the guy was genuinely engaging and a breathe of fresh air when he was communications director.

Did simple stuff well.

I don't know the reason why he left, obviously know he's not well liked by some on here so I won't comment on that, and I don't know the bloke personally. Just as a Comms Manager, though, he was good.
