Marcel Brands

I was starting to transition from 'Everton that', to 'Brands' that'...but then I figured it's all one and the same.

God, if I ran my personal life like Everton runs a football club, I really would be well and truly [Poor language removed]

The cricism of Brands is way OTT, yes mistakes have been made judging from hindsight but many good things have been achieved. If Brands was not there no doubt the critics would find some one else to moan at.

Should give it a rest oh but the nosayers can't because it be boring not to have a moan.

Yes lets be superfans and just go along with mediocrity in silence

Just one look at that squad yesterday proves conclusively he should be sacked.

As soon as managers start choosing players instead of him, his role is done.
It’s so poor isn’t it. In a relatively short space of time Moyes has transformed that West Ham squad with a fraction of the budget. Does look like the manager’s have been behind a lot of the first team signings, every Benitez signing has been his own so like you say what is Brands role there? I’ve had some people tell me in the Yerry Mina thread that they don’t even think he has much say in contract renewals so what is he actually doing…

Looking at how poor the squad was yesterday, can’t escape we’ve players he signed like Gomes, Delph, Iwobi, Gbammin taking up best part of £300/350k a week. Saddled us with more high transfer fees and wages for duds who contribute nothing and we can’t shift. He’s at that point in the story where the little boy has shouted out that the emperor has no clothes on and everyone else is joining in.

I've never been convinced on Brands just because his credentials are from Eredivisie.

But, I'd much rather be a director of football coming into Everton now, than one coming in when Brands did.

The squad is healthier now than in 2018.

Is that enough?

Probably not when you consider we've gone backwards competitively (league positions) since he arrived.

But we can't discuss Brands without referencing the absolute misery he inherited. In his first week he said he had to reduce the squad by more than a quarter - Schneiderlin, Garbutt, Stekelenburg ,Ramirez, Bolasie, Tosun, Walcott, Niasse, Martina, Besic, Tarashaj, Garbutt etc.

That's been the obvious priority.

Unfortunately it seems the DoF role, held by anyone, is completely pointless with Kenwright and Moshiri thinking they're footballing people.

I think it's abundantly clear Rondon is Benitez' signing. The club is run so poorly with the interference from manager, Kenwright and Moshiri.

Sadly I don't see success for this club whilst that dynamic continues.

Is there a football club with a director of football who has 100% control?

As in, no input from their employer/owner, and no input from the manager?

I doubt it.

As I said earlier in the thread;

What you said is 'He is a DOF in name only'

You then sought to explain that by claiming we were bringing in players Brands didn't want.

That's some assumption... isn't it?

How do we know Brands didn't want Allan or Rodriguez? If Ancelotti unlocked those doors, we'd be foolish to not take advantage.

We needed midfielders, perhaps Brands felt both players - only obtainable because of Ancelotti - topped any on the list he could bring in?

My point is though - the big money we spent while Ancelotti was here - on players Ancelotti admitted he hadn't heard of (Godfrey), or we bid for before Ancelotti was even here (Doucoure). Those players, clearly, and definitely was Marcel Brands driven.

Every DOF will work with the manager, and some signings will be manager driven, some DOF driven - but both will agree. Ultimately, the buck stops with the Director of Football. The good signings - Godfrey are him, as are the bad ones, like Delph. Trying to portion or credit or blame is a bit daft, really.

Even now with Benitez. Clearly Townsend, Rondon and Lonergan are Benitez driven but out of pragmatism. Free transfers who add something - that's not to say Brands is being ignored.

I'm getting bored of the shouts that suggest Brands isn't allowed to do his job. There's nothing to suggest that, and it's insulting to the man.

The DOF position he has here, has as much power, if not more considering the number of boards he sits on - than any other club I can think of.

Every DOF has an owner above him who has the final say.

Every DOF has a manager/head coach who will have their opinion on players/transfers.

That’s a very fair post mate. I wouldn’t completely ignore the heavy lifting done in the squad which I think is visible this season in term or rationalisation. It at least look like we’re getting to ground zero.

Two points though id be critical of though, one is the ability to shift lads, it’s fine to say we’re getting there, but relatively 0 income coming into the club, to assist players. He’s essentially let contracts just run down and lads walking away. I know the response will be no one will buy, but even Walsh could shift deadwood here and at least get some thing.

Secondly we are moving into a cycle that we should be reaping reward for his investments, Bernard, Jamo, Kean - we invested and we did poor deals out for, I honestly don’t believe there weren’t better markets or deals to be done for those 3. When you look on what he signed, its hard to see us turn a profit on Gbamin or Iwobi. To be fair we probably would on Digne, Richarlison, Gray and Godfrey. But these are lads you want to build around.
