..where did Shakhtar finish in the seasons before Fonseca arrived? I’m interested if he developed his own team or did he inherit a good side.

He's won it for the 2nd season in a row eggs and the 2 seasons before that they finished 2nd and they won it for 5 seasons before that. So accordong to wiki they've won it 7 out of the last 9 seasons and finished 2nd in the 2 they didn't win it.

Edit - in fact the only time they've finished lower than 2nd was 1995/96 when they finished 10th.

Does this point to a crap league, great recruitment or great management? Hmmmmm

The fact that Watford fans still have good things to say about to him means a lot. He did not leave the team nicely, but they could see the talent he brought to their team. Hopefully he will be a little bit easier to work with here.

Yeah because its Watford, there hopes and ambitions were a lot smaller then ours, of course they like him, but whats good for them isnt good enough for us, im sure Koeman/Martinez and Big Sam would also be good for them, there one of the smallest clubs thats ever played in the top flight

2nd both seasons before he arrived but he inherited the team he has now. None of his signings the last two years are the starters. Shown he can improve players then?

..cheers, Matey. So it appears it was a very decent team he inherited. I’m not undermining his achievement, but he turned them from runners-up to Champions. Whoever takes us over will not be so fortunate. It’s just a consideration.

Just not sure about this guy. What a situation we're in. Most want Allardyce gone, and for me it has to happen. But, I'd be lying if i said I was confident that the next appointment sorts us out.

The way I'm looking at it mate is

Silva in - Samuel out = improvement
Brands in - Walsh out = surely an improvement
A stray cat in - Elstone out = massove improvement

Just getting rid of the 3 above will automatically improve us.

Why should Silva be first choice now?
Correct me if I am wrong, but at the time of Koeman's dismissal, the choices for replacement were very limited. We could not realistically attract any of the top continental names away from their respective CL playing teams midseason. Hard enough in the off season!
The only heads we could turn at the time were the mid table over-achievers like Silva. Watford were flying high (for them), and they suddenly found themselves with a flavor of the month boss.
Watford got greedy, Silva got distracted, time was passing too fast and we were getting that sinking feeling. Then, out of the dark foreboding mist, like an old barnacle covered ghost ship, came HMS Allardyce. We knew it would be a rough, scurvy riddled ride. The reputation of the pirate crew was known far and wide, but it looked like the only way out. And so our journey continued in the ships stinking brig, with many falling foul to sickness and starvation. Many more were just bored, and became as listless as the thick gravy ocean in which the ship floated.
Now, finally back in the safety of port (Midtablesville), we can rid ourselves of the rat infested wreck and look to boarding one of the many shiny new ships now moored at the dock.
Silva is there, of course, but no longer looking like the over-achieving cabin boy, and more like a drowned rat, having been kicked overboard for acts of mutiny.
So the question remains, do we give the lad a chance (very wet behind the ears, but packing lots of ambition), or do we raid the treasure chest and try and bag us someone with proven ability on the high seas of European footy?

They finished 10th in a two horse race? Didn’t realise Martinez had even been there.

Kiev won the previous 2 leagues before Fonseca rolled up, finishing runners up on both occasions. He certainly developed their style of play but he undoubtedly inherited a good side too. Taking them to the semis of Europa League in his 1st season.
