Martinez new Belgium head coach

We already did a poll of managers post-Kendall MK1. Martinez was miles behind Moyes & Joe:

A best manager poll is a pretty incongruous question to set when only one has won us anything. The poll should have had some major qualification statement added to it.

In any case, Martinez might not have ben our best manager in the last 30 years, but he IS the most gifted coach. There is no question of that. He knows how to plot unlikely victories against the odds with tactics to fit a team that will overcome more formidable opponents. Which Everton manager since Kendall would you put money on other than Martinez to outmanoeuvre a very decent Brazil team, for example?

None.

With the players Belgium have? Moyes would've bricked it and lost 0-1, I grant you. But Joe would've bagged a stylish win. Koeman first-season vintage might've too.

Was that the game where Courtois was unanimously voted man of the match, even by Roberto?

Hazard was by far the best man in that game. Even the Brazilians congratulated him afterwards, he was sublime. The rest also played a good game, but Hazard was the best.

Ha ha, I'm happy to plead guilty to a bit of @davek exaggeration and twisting the facts! However, several outlets did have Courtois as MoM, notably the BBC.

Other reports had him as MoM too, stating:

"Courtois showed why he has regularly been considered one of the world's best goalkeepers on Friday in Kazan, producing a string of vital saves – including from Neymar late on " and another "Credit to Thibaut Courtois, whose saves against Brazil ensured his side could advance to the semis."

Me, I thought De Bruyne was sensational that game as well as Hazard - they both played as well as they do virtually every week for their clubs. And Lukaku, in the first half, was as good as I've ever seen him, and Martinez does deserve some credit for that by giving him the role he played in that game, as I've stated much, much earlier on this thread!

Some more facts from the game just to show that, although they lost, Brazil were by no means 'outmanoeuvred':

Brazil 9 shots on target, Belgium 3.

Brazil had 18 % more possession than Belgium.

Brazil made 521 passes (with 88 % accuracy), Belgium 374 passes (with 80 % accuracy).

Brazil had 8 corners, Belgium 3.

I thought Hazard was by far the best player in that game. He could do whatever he wanted to do. Mind you probably also costed him, since he later admitted that he was exhausted against France. You had all the Brazilians saying afterwards that he was untouchable.

Most of the Courtois saves were saves you'd expect from a keeper from his calibre, imo.

Yes once they were ahead they proceeded playing counter attacking football. Not what they do normally tbf. Like against Swiss on friday; they kept attacking after 1-0; even though to me it felt like they were missing a man in the middle (there was almost no midfield) since the Swiss always had an extra man. I would have put on Vanaken or whatever; they just kept going forwards and could have suffered from a few counters. Mind you I thought the Swiss were really good.

Do you think Roberto will bring in a replacement for Henry? I know he's brought in Shawn Maloney but perhaps he'll want someone to work with the strikers.

Yes he's going to get another one in November. Won't be now though, the whole Belgian FA is a bit crippled because of the scandal (I made another topic about it) with the very corrupt agents (also working in Engeland btw) and the two referees they corrupted and influenced games (in the relegation battle). Was a bit of a shock for me at first too, tbf, I didn't think refs were corruptible, just incompetent.

An example (according to one of them this was not an offside (would be harder now though since every game has VAR) - no offside:

763

It's sort of diverting attention away from the current international games since everything is a bit in crisis. Like the Belgian second division didn't play this weekend as a result and some are asking that Jupiler Pro league suffers the same faith until everything is cleared up. And possibly one of the involved Clubs (KV Mechelen), could face a possible deletion/forced relegation (no fun for the supporters since they've already had issues before and quite a few of the fans invested their personal capital - lots of money for normal people). They won the European cup (the cup variety) and the European supercup in '88.

What a legend . A one-off :hayee:

yes it's terrible and even worse for occurring at a time when Belgium have not only their best ever crop of players, but a squad that most countries, bar the major football powers, would regard as their best ever.

Big game tonight - would like to eavesdrop on Roberto and Ronnie's after match chat!
