Getting your gloating in a bit too early Dave: he's not been appointed yet.

Surely you don't believe what these lazy journalists write? Allegri - successful in Italy and available: Emery successful in Spain and Spanish; Fat Ron ex-Barca player and a manager; El Gaffer Catalan and a manager.

Meanwhile, I haven't noticed you mentioning his 'record-breaking' season at Everton too much recently, and your dogged refusal to accept that the Moyesiah's 4th place was actually our best ever finish, rather than 'El Maestro's' 72 points. Or would you still prefer to finish 2nd with 97 points rather than being Champions with 81 points, as Leicester were?
No, I dont take it for granted. Tghe issue is that (outside the usual suspects on this thread) his name rests easily in any short-list for a top job.

“Unfortunately”. Ignore the majority of bitter meffs on here. He’ll do very well for you.

Will be official shortly. Valverde will be sacked today, fortunately. Unfortunately, Roberto Martinez appears to be the frontrunner to take over with Henry

Just the first step, next has to be Segura's removal - rumours of Jordi Cruyff as a possible replacement, hope that is true
I was told on here that Henry was the brains behind the Belgium success. That's why he did a marvellous job at Monaco.

Roberto should get back on the phone to Graeme Jones.

Martinez believes that there is no better technical English player than Tom Cleverley.

"I think you do not have a better English player. Technically, he is as good as you get. The way he executes, how he reads the game, for me he is one of the most sensational you are going to see in Premier League history.

“I wouldn’t sell him for any money in the current market. I want to see him go from strength to strength because I know there is so much more to come.”

Most have Mike Walker as being worse, out of post-war managers - but it's close. I'd rate El Gaffer as the worst, but recognise it's a narrow decision - there's good arguments to be made on both sides of that one.

Big potential difference between the two is how they responded to their failures at Everton - Walker had worked miracles at Norwich (actually a different level to what Martinez ever achieved) so in principle you might have thought he could bounce back, just one bad appointment that didn't work out. But it actually broke him and he was out of top flight management for good. Martinez has also been out of top flight management for a number of years, with his Belgian sinecure, but is clearly working hard to keep his profile out there. So he's at least talking a good game about getting back in the dugout.

Oh come on there is no argument to be had there! Walker is miles worse than anybody we have had. It's not even close.

It is weird how he just seemed to give up after coming here though, Think he had half a season back and Norwich and then he was just finished.

I actually think it’s a risky move for Martinez in case it does go tits up there.

Barca won’t take any crap I’d imagine and they need a lot of fixing right now.

I just don’t like him as a person all that much.

  • "Cleverly is an intelligent modern-day footballer. His movement and understanding of space is really good for a young player"

  • "He is an exceptional young player in the sense of his ability to play in different positions. He is such a mobile boy who can play wide on either side and in central midfield. Also, which he has showed at Watford last year, he is a goalscorer. Tom has got outstanding qualities as far as goalscoring is concerned"

  • "Tom is one of the brightest prospects in the English game. For a young boy, he has a good footballing brain which, when coupled with his energy and ability, makes for a player with a fine future ahead of him."

Alex Ferguson - most successful manager in the game.

I'd prefer to see Moonhead at Barca so they could pay his wages.

But I wouldn't begrudge Roberto a shot at the job and I think he could suit the Barca ideal quite well. I think the Spanish league and Europe with a top level team is the ideal set up for Martinez's approach.

There's a case to be made that Martinez right now is too good for Barcelona. In all seriousness: who's stock is higher?

Depends on your perspective - Walker took a mediocre side and made them terrible, Martinez took a strong side and made them bad. Both nadirs in the club's history. The worst Everton teams I've ever personally seen have been under HKIII and Smith, but the raw material they were working with was just really weak, plus the club was basically falling to pieces off the pitch at that time. So you've got to take a balanced view of these things.

Walker calling it a day after us is a mystery - getting a team like Norwich to third in the league is not something you can bluff your way into, there has to be at least some managerial quality there. The way he failed with us though was like a man getting rumbled, like imposter syndrome except for real. It wasn't a failure of his system, or he had a bust up with senior pros, he was just a man way out of his depth and he basically owned up to that by calling it a day. El Gaffer takes a different approach.
