Why? He is rubbish as a day to day manager.

They're Wigan and they spent nothing. They had to be relegated. Martinez handing them the biggest rocket ride to the sun surely made up for that.

The 4 seasons before Martinez they were a solid midtable side, with the exception of their second season when they only stayed up on the final day after season where the squad that won promotion to the PL and finished 10th was ripped apart. The 4 seasons after they got worse and worse, going to the final couple of games before sealing survival then finally dropping in 2013, coincidence?

Managers to win the primary cup in the top 5 leagues in the last 5 years include:
Spain: Antonio Alvarez, Ronald Koeman
Italy: Vladimir Petkovic, Walter Mazzari, Leonardo Araujo, Delio Rossi
France: Jocelyn Gourvennec, Francis Gillot
Germany: Dieter Hecking
England: Roberto, Roberto Di Matteo

Point being most of these are total unknowns and none are top class managers because cup competitions can be completely fluked. Using one cup run as a gauge for anything is a terrible way to make decisions.

Those other continetal cups mean zero. Ours means a lot. Especially when it's won by an ale house team against the best team in the country and one of the best in Europe.

Stop being churlish. It was a great achievement.

The war's over: you lost.
