Just never going to work here for him, i think southampton would be a good move gor him. Drop down a league and get his confidence back, blame the club for not cashing in on him at west brom. Is another davies for me just be kept to long and not managed properly here

Appreciate the effort put in here, good or bad resulting from it, but his time here has run its course imo and good luck to him if so.

We put a bid in for him but think Everton asked for about 11 million which we hadn't got also he told our Manager he wanted to go back to Everton to fight for his place back. Also we only ever played him at RB which although he didn't mind he wanted to play at CH.

There was only talk of a call up among the deluded paint-sniffing fans in our fanbase. We gassed him up, voted him player of the season and it inflated his ego so much and made him think he was a silky Stones-esque ball playing centre back that didn’t have to jump for a header or get stuck in. His own attitude has stopped his development in its tracks, not an injury.
Yeah but mate remember when he pwned Firminho? Classic, that was.

…if there is one thing he hasn’t lost it’s his confidence. Bags full of ego but little to back it up. He gets found out because he’s simply not very good.

in some ways I think hes been a little unlucky. On 2 or 3 occasions when he has found some form something has curtailed it, either a change of manager, an injury or something like a lockdown. Obviously if he was truly top draw, those things wouldnt matter, but theres a layer of players below that, who are probably ok, but need some fortune and I would put him into that grouping.

I think his mindset is not really suited to being a top defender. Being a defender is about sending danger, and proactively rectifying it. I dont think he has those instincts at all.

I think one factor, and it’s not just affecting Holgate, is that the required skillset of a PL centre back has changed in the last 2-3 seasons.

It used to be that a couple of top teams in the league applied a high press and pressurised defenders, now every single team does it (in different ways and at different times).

Central defenders are targeted now as a central tactic in a way they were not before.

Being able to think quickly and calmly under this new pressure is now the key trait.

We have seen lots of once promising centre back’s career a take a severe nose dive because of this, the biggest example for me is Harry Maguire.

some have been able to cope but others have not, like goalkeepers after the back pass rule came in.

You’ve got to be able to head the ball as a centre back, even more so if the manager plays narrow and you’re being asked to defend crosses.

Holgate and Godfrey are two of the technically worst headers of a ball you’ll see. Don’t read the flight of the ball, struggle to get in the right position and don’t attack it. I’d punt the pair of them, useless liabilities.

I’ve always thought his biggest issue is his mentality, but in a different way. He seems to have gone through periods of getting his head down, grafting and improving, getting his place in the side and looking good. Then he becomes complacent, buys into his own hype and let’s his foot off the gas. Even losing 2% is enough in this league for other players on their game to make you look daft. He’s then struggled to reclaim his previous mindset/form.

With all that said I hope Southampton are talking actual money not a loan, I wouldn’t be loaning him out anywhere as it doesn’t really benefit us with how thin the squad is getting.

I've always had the impression that his poor decision making, especially his rash challenges, have been a sign of lack of confidence in his own abilities.

Where does this ego thing come from?

Is it because he chews or something?

He has never once complained about not being in the team or anything and its blatantly obvious that he has been short on confidence (and maybe ability) in his recent performances. It probably hasn't helped that whatever sporadic appearances he has made this season have came after sitting on the bench for months before being thrown into the side out of position.

It's certainly time for him to move on but the ego thing annoys me.
