Where does this ego thing come from?

Is it because he chews or something?

He has never once complained about not being in the team or anything and its blatantly obvious that he has been short on confidence (and maybe ability) in his recent performances. It probably hasn't helped that whatever sporadic appearances he has made this season have came after sitting on the bench for months before being thrown into the side out of position.

It's certainly time for him to move on but the ego thing annoys me.
Yeah, agree with this. Constant manger and position changes haven't helped a player who can be good and make mistakes in the same game!

Hope he gets to hold down a position and prove himself.

Work rate not usually an issue here, just knowing his position (owing to the issues above). He never hid when interviewed, spoke honestly and confidently of team challenges and performances when they needed to improve. Media training and wanting to be honest with fans doesn't mean he has an ego.

Feel disappointed, and good luck Mason. You leaving is just another example of how seasons of financial and coaching mis-management has stunted careers and talent.

…I think most professionals have it but one thing I certainly don’t think Holgate lacks is belief in himself. It’s not something I’m criticising, he took an opportunity when he came back from his last loan showing real character.

He’s not scared of games of football (believe me, some players are) but his lack of quality is always found out when he has a run of games. He’s slow, no powers of recovery, he’s rash and flat footed in the tackle and he’s often out of position. He’s just very ordinary but has managed to get extraordinary deals at Everton.

I’ve always thought his biggest issue is his mentality, but in a different way. He seems to have gone through periods of getting his head down, grafting and improving, getting his place in the side and looking good. Then he becomes complacent, buys into his own hype and let’s his foot off the gas. Even losing 2% is enough in this league for other players on their game to make you look daft. He’s then struggled to reclaim his previous mindset/form.

With all that said I hope Southampton are talking actual money not a loan, I wouldn’t be loaning him out anywhere as it doesn’t really benefit us with how thin the squad is getting.

Disagree with both of you.

When hes thrown in he hasnt looked good as a CB.

But over a run of games hes improved even being talked about for England and big moves.

Then he suffers an injury or something happens and he doesnt recover from it

There was that point he was our best CB (had Williams and Keane to fight with) and won our young player of the year (if I recall).

But I think he's now in a huge hole that he can't get out of. Every time he plays he's shocking.

No doubt he'll move, get a run of games, and be an solid enough defender.

You’ve got to be able to head the ball as a centre back, even more so if the manager plays narrow and you’re being asked to defend crosses.

Holgate and Godfrey are two of the technically worst headers of a ball you’ll see. Don’t read the flight of the ball, struggle to get in the right position and don’t attack it. I’d punt the pair of them, useless liabilities.
Holgate did head the ball back nicely to Keane who scored the first goal in our fightback against Palace. Just saying.

Anyway, time to offload him. He's crap. So is Godfrey.
