There was only talk of a call up among the deluded paint-sniffing fans in our fanbase. We gassed him up, voted him player of the season and it inflated his ego so much and made him think he was a silky Stones-esque ball playing centre back that didn’t have to jump for a header or get stuck in. His own attitude has stopped his development in it’s tracks, not an injury.
How dare the fans have any form of enjoyment or excitement about a player in great form!

Also lets make player of the season awards only for players that have been playing well for over three seasons (if that's suitable?) in case it over inflates their ego and their form dips!

Was probably more a case of "If Keane has England caps then Holgate is probably due a few too".

Probably got nothing to do with ego though, he just isn't that good.

Who was the bozo at the club who gave him a five year deal in 2020? :whip:

Anyway, due to his wages I would guess, nobody wants him on a perm. Maybe a obligation to buy if Sheffield united stay up but who knows. We'll probably be paying 60% of his wages while he's away on loan. Mind, something off the books anyway.

It was Ferdinand who was bigging him up, he signed him up to his Sports promotion Agency and was praising him up as the new England CH and saying Man City were interested in him, he signed Godfrey and Keane up to so blame the Ferdinand curse 😆

I don’t remember this.
Yeah if I’m remembering correctly him and DCL were touted for an England call up together and the suspension of the league due to covid meant it never happened. I’m fairly certain it was during that purple patch where he popped up with an insane range of passing.

Either way he reverted to his usual standard and that was the end of that. They cynic in me thinks he knew he was having a purple patch and it was likely his only chance of a cap and when it never happened he stopped playing as hard.

and if that's true it's also unlucky - it's really hard to keep up motivation at the best of times, and he should have kept working, but some players need good coaching and mentoring, and some consistency - and a lot of our players fall into that category, and we just had the worst run of tactics, a lot of upheaval and dramatic changes. Crap time to be a young player at our club, and to be any kind of middle-of-the-road player really. wonder if even Messi & Mbappe would have done well at Everton in the last 6 years lol

(just wanted to get Messi & Mbappe mentioned on the Holgate thread)

Think he was unlucky he got injured after the Lockdown comeback so missed a couple of months at the start of Carlo's full season (20/21))?. When he got back in team he was used as makeshift RB and towards the end CH along side Godfrey which was a bit of a disaster , Villa and Fulham spring to mind
