Watched the U21s until the missus put the boot in as she wanted Corrie & Bake off.

From the 25 minutes I saw (RS 0-2 up - first a dodgy pen given away by our new man. Outside the box but its the RS ....) and he's a long way off the 1st team at the moment. Matthew Pennington would be ahead by a street at the moment. Geraint Jones look good defensively at Right Back.

Did well as the game went on one of the best players on the pitch second half

Strolled through d game after given the pen away. Nearly scored a cracker too. Liked what I saw of him. Think a loan for season to decent championship club will do him good as he won't be challenged at 21s level

Looked good, not sure if he's yet got the height and physicality to play CB in the prem but certainly looked a cut above everyone else out there. I don't think Pennington will make it being honest despite some of the good reviews from some. Seems to be straining everything he has just to compete at this level whereas the likes of Rooney, Barkley Rodwell Stones just look like they're cruising. Still there's always a Hibbert in every generation so who knows how they'll all develop.

He's more Dave Watson than John Stones. Both are equally effective. Massive step for him but reckon he'll still enjoy a good career.

I rate pennington a lot, he's a jags/watson figure, not as nice on the eye but a solid defender.

Probably. Envisage a similar career path to Shane Duffy.

Holgate was fantastic. He has everything. His reading of the game. His pace. His distribution. His overall calm. The best CB I've ever seen from an Everton player at this level.

I was impressed with him particularly in the second half, wasn't flustered and looked composed on the ball and commanding in the air - despite not being the tallest.

It's an interesting dilemma whether he gets loaned out or not. For me he needs to stay at FF , no point in buying and loaning him out immediately as Chelsea and RS do. He's had a sound development at Barnsley and clearly fits our system too, so we should take on the next stage of his development, even if it means more u21 games than lower division first team football. It's what has been done with Stones and Galloway.

Really glad that he's getting some good reviews! I didn't watch the game but SSN went with the headline of 'Holgate gives away penalty on debut' or similar which was very kind of them for a young lad...

SSN were all over that penalty and just completely flat out ignored the other 80 minutes of the game. Looks too good for U21 league, I suspect we may see him in the first team squad come second half of the season.
