Stones was always going to be a centre back even at Barnsley, he just started out a right back when he first broke into the first team, so any mistakes he made wouldn't be as costly as they would at centre back, as a 18 year old he needed protection until he'd gained experience that's all, It also helped him develop his ball carrying skills, but once his confidence had grown he was always going to move over. We're doing the same now with a young kid called Mason Holgate he's only 18 with a hand full of first team games to his name, he's always been a centre back in the under 18s but his first team appearances have been at right back, until yesterday when he played central once our centre back got injured and was superb, he'll do the same as what Stones did he'll leave for a premier league club and be classed as a right back but really he's always going to be a world class centre back.

I posted this on here 9 months ago, and I stand by it, forget about his height, his reading of the game is far too good for him not to be a centre half, You'll see this for yourselves in time.

Nice one mate!!

Got to say after watching the cup game you certainly seem to be producing lads who want to play football properly as well. All good to hear on Holgate, if he ends up being half as good as Stones then he'll still be top class.

Someone on here asked me for my opinion on him, and what he was like compared to stones at the same age, on this site at the start of the year, and my answer was, with Stones he looked as though he had the potential to be a Barca, Real, Man Utd, Chelsea, player, for most of his career. With Holgate he'll be a Everton, Liverpool, Newcastle, Villa, player for most of his career, if they both continued to develop at the same rate, that was my opinion at the time and it is now.

Lee Dixon was saying ahead of the England game yesterday that Barkley's biggest problem was adding goals to his game. Really?

Mate, he's not too far wrong. I think it's more that Barkley needs to consistently add goals to his game. He has started off very well this season, he's a young lad still, and he has every attribute as he matures to be as consistent and as influential as Stevie G-lar was for that lot for many years.

I just wonder whether the more pressing issues are where to play him to bring out the best of him, his decision making when to pass, shoot, dribble, do a flick, keep it easy etc and sometimes the ease with which he seems to get tackled. I think he will always score goals, that is not an issue for me.

For us, England, Sheff Wed & Leeds he has played 111 games, scored 15 goals.
That's 1 in every 7.4 games.
It does need improving, Ross should be getting mirallas figures when it comes to goals

He will improve that ratio, I'm sure. My issue with Lee Dixon's comment was that it seemed to suggest that scoring more goals was the only concern he had with Barkley's game, everything else was fine.

Barkley is in his third ever season as a regular Premier League player though. He will get there, but it's still very early in his career remember.

Not many people seem to have noticed the standard of expectation for a midfielder have now changed.

Its Gerrard and Lampard that have changed this, but ironically see the stats tell a different story.

Looking at the first 100 senior games, this is over approx 3/4 season.

Lampard
Games - 101
Goals -16
Ratio - 1 in 6
England caps at this point - 0

Gerrard
Games - 96
Goals - 9
Ratio - 1 in 11
England caps at this point - 2

Barkley
Games - 114
Goals - 8
Ratio - 1 in 8
England caps at this point - 14 and 1 goal

Problem is, they compare Ross now with how others were at 28, that's completely unfair. It should be compared as above.

How'd you work Barkleys ratio out mate?

Agree with your point though.

I agree mate, he will get more consistent with his goals.
