In 1987 I worked in Croydon. The journey from Maidenhead was exactly 50 miles. It took me about 3 hours to get to Croydon by car (left home at 6 am). Kept having to change routes because of fallen trees. There were about 5 people in the office out of about 60 or 80. Most of whom lived locally. My boss phoned from London and asked how many staff were in and he was not impressed when I told him. He didn't say 'well done' to me though! The tube wasn't working, so I took a series of buses to get from NW London to Victoria in central London. I eventually got to work about 11-ish and there were literally only half a dozen of us there in a department of 70 people.
We spent an hour talking about our journeys, then went to the pub for a couple of hours or so, then headed home.
All in a day's work.
