Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Well I know a few of you are dealing with this at the moment as well, everything seems to be going ok with my dad he's had a few adult service visits and they think he needs residential housing, fingers crossed sooner than later for my sisters sake although she's dealing with it well bless her.

I didn't know they did a financial check, apparently if you have over £26,000 they take it off you for costs, crazy.

My dad asked for some books so took him some but not sure if he's reading them or not. I gave him some I know he's read trying to stay familiar. He is deteriorating though it's a bit awful even though I can't stand the bloke, it's not nice too see.

My Mum was discharged from hospital shortly before she passed away, we wanted her in her own home. She needed two carers first thing in the morning and last thing at night. We had to pay even though they were provided by the hospital as Mum owned her house. Hope things get sorted for your Dad, sister and for you, horrible situation.

The thing is T that the things you didn't like will probably be the first things he loses ,give him another chance before it is too late to make a difference .
That is what I am hoping for with my youngest . Cannot you take some of his money legally ? I am sure there is an amount he is allowed to pass down per year .I know one of the more qualified will help on here .

Yeah the money situation is difficult and in most cases unfair . The upper capital limit is £23000 rising to £100k October 25. Essentially you would expect to have to pay for care/ residential housing until the capital falls below £23k then the council take over .

It’s a tricky one. You can’t for instance “gift” a house to relatives to avoid it being used for care costs. There is a £3 k per year gifting allowance that can be done under Inheritance Tax rules, I’m not sure if this is also allowed in this case . It’s something I’m both unclear about and wary of, if you give the money away eg in my case under a Power of Attorney, and it’s deemed illegal later you could be liable for paying that money back. If anybody knows a bit more than me I would welcome any comments.

I should've added, he doesn't have anywhere near that amount, so don't know what happens then. I only mentioned it because I thought it was a bit steep but he doesn't have it.

I think my circumstances are very different from yours blue, my mother and father are a big part of why I have these mental health problems, they weren't very nice people. I am only being civil with him for my sister and due to the fact he's no longer copus mentus so no point harbouring ill feeling now.

Just been on with utilita, I have paid £193.15 on a bill of £73.64 plus arrears of £36.88 so in total this month I have paid £230.03 for gas and electric on a bill of £73. Same last month on a £77 bill. I have been getting text messages saying I have an outstanding amount to pay for this month.

It's bloody stressful getting threatened with action, or to be forced onto a pre payment meter when I know I am paying far too much already. No offer of reimbursement like. it is leaving me on my arse skint. As soon as my arrears are clear I am changing off utilita, they're awful and threaten action all the time, unnecessarily.

It's a while since I've dealt with this T so I may be a little bit out of date, but it may not be quite as bad as it sounds. Your dad will be entitled to attendance allowance which is around £100pw. The system will also take his income, ie pensions, which is fair enough given it will be providing full board and healthcare in the nursing home. You will then need to use his savings to cover the rest of the costs, until such time as his assets fall below the threshold, which is presumably now £26,000. The council will then take over the full cost.

Edit. Just seen the above post. You won't need to pay any extra. The council will take the attendance allowance and pension and cover the rest.

So in view of @Barnfred 55 's comments of my wife's concoctions masquerading as food I felt I need to show where the inspiration comes from ,these are pages from a weekly gossip mag our neighbour has passed on .You will need google translate or similar as I am far too busy .The first is an Orange sauce with chicken and bits using lovage that was spoken about a few weeks ago.1687440705318.webp
