Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

One for @blueloon ( given his relative proximity) but you can all join in.....

Watching Shetland, one of my favourite TV shows ( although nowhere near as good without Jimmy Perez, anyway I digress) and was struck by the incredible landscape but no trees . So I looked it up and nope there are no trees in Shetland ( the internet said it so it must be right 😂).

Which begs the question...why?

Sure it's inhospitable but anymore so that the Highlands or even Finland.

Answers on a postcard please.
Various reasons for the lack of trees have been suggested , exposure to weather particularly winds, type of soil, human intervention chopping them down for wood use and creating pastures /agriculture etc. Orkney is the same , very few trees , but both the main Northern Isles do have trees to a certain extent in small patches.

Very little of the ancient Scottish Woodlands remain, these forests are super if you come across them, the majority of the trees in the Highlands have been planted. My visits to Shetland have been limited, but Orkney has the same incredible landscapes and some stunning tourist spots from 3000 year old excavated villages, stone circles , a magnificent cathedral etc . It’s a magical place.

Things don’t get any better. The son of a chap I knew years ago got in touch to arrange a wake at the pub. Then I visited my mate who has PSP and who had broken his hip, he can barely speak and cannot walk, he’s only 67. Then the friend who is in hospital in pain and on morphine, he’s 69, was told his Liver Cancer is at stage 4 and that it has spread to his lungs. He’ll be lucky to see the year out, but all we can do is pray and hope…sorry for delivering more bad news……

Reading this sad post reminds me to treat everyday as a blessing and take time to enjoy the simple things. It must be hard for you to find the words Pete.

Morning all, bright and sunny here. Not quite such an early start, no school run (teacher’s training day) and son’s day off so no dog-sitting. May take a trip into town to pick up a few Christmas bits. Have a good day, all.💙
P.S
Update on son’s MIL - the operation showed that things are more complicated than first thought, so she has been referred back to Addenbrokes and is waiting on the results of another scan. 🤞
