Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Thats about 100 yards from my childhood home, and me Mum still lives there. Ironically, on the said, Nore Road.

And Nore Road is an ancient one, not part of a new estate or sommet. Its been there literally for ages.

My Mum lives oppo the minibus place.
An Fheoir which is the Irish means green bank or the shore of a river. In English it was transferred to the Nore.

Fascinating to find these connections with Somerset.

It might be as bland as some local council member with Irish/Kilkenny roots, suggesting the names back in the day. And the others in the meeting thought they sounded ok!

Is there any ancient church in that area? Checked his biography but no mention of Canice/Kenny going to Somerset.

I have no explanation otherwise unless some landlord from there had properties in Kilkenny and brought the names back.

There is. St Nicholas church. Not sure how old it is, but despite not being the main parish church, its the largest in town. It looks as old as the main one mind.

edit. Just checked. Built 1911, surprisingly. As part of the National Nautical School, (which I knew about). Kinda a navel based borstal school near by. Posh flats now.

I think your suggestion and mine may be the solution. Someone from Somerset who had connections with Kilkenny and adopted these names.

As I said earlier, Cill Channaigh means Canice's Church. Btw I have sung with St Canice's Cathedral (C of I) choir for many years. I also conduct my local RC choir. The Cathedral is beautiful and is on the site of Canice's monastic settlement, which gave the City its name.

If the oldest church is named after St Nicholas, then unlikely that it has any connection with Canice.

Edited my post. St Nicks was built 1911.

Suggests some Somerset/Kilkenny connection. Vague, like.View attachment 156674
I think you have solved the mystery mate.

Mount Juliet is about 20 minutes from where I live. The Nore flows through it. I think the Irish Open is to be played there again this year.

We have a small river that flows on one side of our garden called the Pococke which meets the Nore about 5 miles on. Bishop Pococke was a
fascinating C Of I bishop of Ossory (Kilkenny).

So Roydo, I can claim a tangible link with Somerset!! :)

Of course mate. And welcome any time.

Got to be the root of it. What an interesting diversion on a stormy Sunday!
Great to have intelligent discussion rather than some of the nastiness aimed at our players.

I must visit Kilkenny next time I meet my mate in Weston.

Btw Woodsy, he is an East Belfast Glens supporter. We disagree on everything except Guinness. He has been a brilliant mate for 35 years now.
